Amazon's vision is to be the world's most customer-centric company, and this role is key to delivering that vision. The Fleet Remediation Engineering (FRE) team delivers designs that support our operational data centers to meet ever-evolving customer needs as we continue scale our fleet.

As Project Design Mechanical Engineer you will lead design projects in operational Data Centers that remediate emergent issues, upgrade existing infrastructure and add new services.You will provide lifecycle support from design through to implementation - working closely with stakeholders to deliver projects on schedule and to budget.

You will use your mechanical expertise to :

  • Own the design for data center projects and design-solutions which add infrastructure, capacity, improve availability, and / or increase sustainability.
  • Perform design and equipment submittal review for Data Centers in your region.
  • Interface with internal and external data center design engineering team, server hardware team,environmental health and safety team, field engineering, and controls engineering to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
  • Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Develop into a technical subject matter expert
  • Support construction, commissioning, operations, and turnover.
  • Use their engineering judgement to provide design decisions and recommendations despite uncertainty
  • Are detail and data oriented
  • Are familiar with design / construction standards & processes
  • Have experience managing engineering projects and engineering consultants.
  • Can build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Commissioning, Construction and Design)
  • Can prepare and present progress reports to relevant stakeholders
  • Are comfortable working on live sites as and when required
  • Can effectively prioritize

Key job responsibilities

  • Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
  • Carry out designs & calculations to meet project requirements
  • Manage design consultancy firms to generate, review and release data center designs
  • Manage change, versioning and configuration control.
  • Draft and approval of project scopes, request for proposals (RFP) and request for information (RFI).
  • Work with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of systems
  • Travel for site review and conduct engineering evaluations, audits, and site launches
  • Review and approve equipment submittals
  • Work with internal teams to trouble shoot problems and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action (CA) for design related problems
  • Work with regional vendors and manufactures to specify the appropriate mechanical equipment.
  • Offer offer creative, out of the box solutions
  • Up to 30% travel in EMEA region including but limited to Ireland, Germany, Spain, Israel, Bahrain, KSA and South Africa.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ cumulative years of design experience with industrial or commercial engineering in Mission Critical facilities including but not limited to : data centers, power generation, oil / gas facilities. Pharmaceuticals, Semiconductors
  • Experience with large scale industrial or commercial cooling distribution systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • An in-depth understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics and an ability to interpret the results of CFD analysis.
  • Project Management Certified or Trained
  • Experience in the design, installation, operation, or commissioning of the following equipment : chillers, cooling towers, CRAC units, chilled water loops, mechanical plant sequence of operations, centrifugal pumps, piping design, piping design installation methods, air handling units and duct sizing.
