Job description

The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the Development Team. How this is done may vary widely across organizations, Scrum Teams, and individuals.

What you do:

The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the Product Backlog. Product Backlog management includes:

  • Clearly expressing Product Backlog items;
  • Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions;
  • Optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs;
  • Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will work on next;
  • Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed.

The Product Owner may do the above work or have the Development Team do it. However, the Product Owner remains accountable.

The Product Owner may represent the desires of a committee in the Product Backlog, but those wanting to change a Product Backlog item's priority must address the Product Owner.

The Product Owner decides what will be built and in which order. He or she will:

  • Manage Product Backlog and Release Planning
    • Define the features of the product or desired outcomes of the project.
    • Adjust features/outcomes and priority as needed to ensure ROI.
    • Fully elaborate Acceptance Criteria for User Stories.
    • Prioritize User Stories according to business value.
    • Perform Release planning and ensure that the release backlog is aligned with the Vision and Roadmap.
    • Review backlog in depth with the Scrum Master in preparation for future Release Planning activities.
    • Write new User Stories needed in order to have a complete and comprehensive backlog.
  • Work closely with the Scrum Team
    • Collaborate with the team to ensure User Stories are accurately elaborated and understood.
    • Ensure that everyone in the Scrum Team understands what is required.
    • Be available to answer any questions that arise during Sprint execution and support them.
  • Sprint Planning and Execution
    • Attend Sprint Planning in order to answer any remaining questions.
    • Attend Daily Stand-ups to remain engaged and up-to-date on the team’s progress.
    • Complete incremental reviews of stories as they are completed.
    • Adjust priorities of stories mid-sprint based on impediments or dependencies.
    • Attend the Demo to provide feedback and acceptance of stories.
    • Accept work results.
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Collaborate with Stakeholders outside of the team to review progress.
    • Collect and discuss required functionalities with different Stakeholders. These requirements are then combined and filtered before giving them to the team in the form of prioritized Scrum Product Backlog Items.

What you bring:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in a similar project management/Product Ownership role.
  • Previous working experience as a Product Owner for 3 years +.
