Job Overview:
The Principal Naval Architect is responsible for interpreting business issues and recommending best practices. They solve complex Naval Architecture problems, work independently with minimal guidance, and may lead teams or projects. They are regarded as a specialist with in-depth expertise in Naval Architecture within the Engineering function.
Qualifications:
- 15-20 years of experience in oil and gas, leading engineering teams and performing naval analysis for offshore structures
- Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture (Master’s preferred)
- Knowledge of installation techniques, analysis methods, standards, codes, and guidelines
- Project coordination and execution skills
- Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of a professional engineering society
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of engineers in design inputs and installation engineering, including conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses
- Provide installation loads and perform calculations to ensure capacity and safety
- Evaluate weather conditions affecting offshore installations
- Prepare detailed design calculations, reports, and procedures
- Manage time and resources, forecast needs, and communicate complex concepts effectively
- As Lead Engineer, direct engineering design, plan, organize, and oversee project scope, schedule, and manpower
- Interface with other disciplines, clients, and authorities, document communications, and raise technical queries
- Participate in bid engineering, identify hardware limits, and evaluate bid costs
- During EPCI, manage scope changes, develop clash-free designs, coordinate with departments, and ensure documentation and compliance
- Review and approve design reports, specifications, vendor submissions, and technical verifications
- Assist procurement, update weight reports, and monitor KPIs
- Liaise with external parties, capture lessons learned, and ensure project integrity
- Guide less experienced engineers, supervise team activities, and ensure engineering quality
- Participate in audits, training, and development of standards and procedures
