Role Overview

The Principal EPC Estimator handles medium and small EPC estimates independently, and large estimates (>100MM) with minimal supervision, guiding the Estimating Manager when necessary. This role often involves leading teams or overseeing projects, recognized as a subject matter expert in estimating practices, requiring extensive knowledge of the discipline. The employee interacts with leaders across Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Fabrication to develop comprehensive EPC estimates and presents the basis of estimate to management.

This individual can perform most discipline estimates, from basic takeoffs to final costing, including materials, fabrication, subcontracts, construction, localization, and indirect costs. They organize and lead the estimating effort, producing detailed and conceptual estimates, and develop estimating tools and standards.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead customer Open Book Estimate reviews
  2. Manage precontract budgets up to $250K
  3. Prepare estimates for proposals by collaborating with operations, engineering, supply chain, and fabrication teams
  4. Develop estimates based on standards, data, and scope of work
  5. Create estimating tools, procedures, standards, and guidelines
  6. Evaluate new estimating techniques and software, recommending to leadership
  7. Maintain databases of pricing structures and benchmark data
  8. Analyze scope documents and calculate project costs
  9. Develop comprehensive estimates, including technical uncertainties and incomplete designs
  10. Provide cost-effective solutions to differentiate from competitors
  11. Prepare estimates using work breakdown structures and charts of accounts
  12. Conduct precontract meetings to plan bid strategies
  13. Evaluate and validate quantities from engineering documents
  14. Assist in obtaining quotes from suppliers and subcontractors
  15. Coordinate with legal, tax, insurance, and finance teams
  16. Travel to project sites as needed
  17. Collaborate across functions for accuracy
  18. Recommend cost-reduction measures
  19. Perform risk analysis and lead risk workshops
  20. Ensure timely deliverables and report delays

Qualifications

  • BSc in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent
  • 15+ years relevant experience, including 10+ in estimating
  • Experience estimating large projects (>100MM)
  • Skills in multiple EPC disciplines and coordination
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel; VBA and Power BI are valued
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and construction industry skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience in client and subcontractor environments
