Primary Higher Level Teaching Assistant JESS

Job Scope
The Higher Level Teaching Assistant, also known as (HLLSA) at JESS, plays a vital role in maintaining the continuity of learning across various classrooms. Acting primarily as an internal supply cover, the HLLSA collaborates closely with teaching staff to deliver lessons in the absence of regular teachers and supports classrooms in the absence of an LSA. He/She provides support to students, teachers, and the school to raise achievement standards by utilizing advanced knowledge and skills in planning, monitoring, assessing, and managing classes, and encouraging pupils to become independent learners. The HLLSA also supports student welfare and inclusion in all aspects of school life. While some intervention activities may be undertaken, the primary responsibility is to cover for absent teachers and teaching assistants. The HLLSA should always conduct themselves professionally to support and promote the aims and Core Values of JESS.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This list is illustrative of the general responsibilities and is not exhaustive. The postholder may be required to undertake other duties appropriate to the role, as directed by the Headteacher. Responsibilities may be modified by the Headteacher upon mutual agreement to reflect role changes:

  • Supporting students:
  • Develop understanding of individual student needs and learning differences.
  • Ensure students access lessons through clarification, adaptation, and resources.
  • Work with individual students or groups as directed by the Class Teacher.
  • Apply best practices for supporting student progress and well-being.
  • Assist students requiring personal care support.
  • Support students with additional learning needs (physical, behavioural, educational) as guided by the Class Teacher or the Oasis department.
  • Maintain an orderly and tidy learning environment.
  • Implement the school's behaviour policy.
  • Supervise students vigilantly to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Encourage student independence.
  • Provide timely feedback to support learning progress.
  • Supporting the Class Teacher:
  • Collaborate in planning and delivering lessons.
  • Ensure equipment and materials are prepared and suitable.
  • Contribute to preparing teaching resources for diverse needs.
  • Record observations of student performance and communicate with the Class Teacher.
  • Provide cover as required and directed by SLT.
  • Supporting the curriculum:
  • Support individual students or groups as directed.
  • Plan and deliver targeted support programs based on learning targets.
  • Assist in organising resources for teaching and learning.
  • Participate in inclusion team planning, self-evaluation, and training.
  • Provide examination access support where appropriate.
  • Support the use of assistive technologies.
  • Collect and analyse data related to support programs.
  • Wellbeing of students:
  • Promote and safeguard student welfare.
  • Comply with safeguarding and child protection policies, reporting concerns immediately.
  • Facilitate peer interactions under the guidance of the Class Teacher.
  • Other responsibilities:
  • Comply with staff and school policies, including the Code of Conduct.
  • Attend meetings, training days, and school events as required.
  • Supervise students out of class (e.g., gate, break, lunch).
  • Participate in school trips and events outside normal hours.
  • Communicate with parents as necessary.
  • Participate in appraisal processes.
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably assigned by the Class Teacher, Year Group Leader, or SLT.
