Job description

The FutureGeneration
of Resilient and Infrastructure Design Technology Hub (FutureGRID
TecH) in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu
Dhabi seeks to recruit one or more motivated postdoctoral
associates (or research scientist for experienced candidates with 5
years of post-PhD experience). The candidates will work under the
supervision of FutureGRID TecH director Dr. Mohamed Moustafa to
carry out cutting-edge research in the broad area of future
structures and resilient infrastructure systems with interest in
applications of new and emerging technologies. Particular areas of
interest include:

  • advanced construction and reinforcement materials (UHPC, ECC, SMA)
  • UHPC mix development, material characterization, modeling, and structural design
  • structural 3D printing (metals, concrete, and composites)
  • computational mechanics and structural topology optimization
  • vision-based structural health monitoring
  • autonomous and drone-based infrastructure inspection and vibration monitoring

Successful candidates must hold a PhD degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Material Engineering. Other related fields such as Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, and Material Science are also welcomed. Required qualifications include: strong communication and presentation skills; a track record in writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal publications; and previous or relevant experience in mentoring or supervising undergraduate research or junior graduate students.

A formal training, education, or certification in a secondary area (beyond the main PhD focus) such as additive manufacturing, advanced/hybrid manufacturing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, robotics, UAVs, computational fluid dynamics, etc. is a plus. Other preferred qualifications include: expertise in programming and coding (preferably using Python and C, and GUI development); expertise in computational mechanics and finite element simulation and modeling; expertise in laboratory and multiscale experimental testing at the material component and structural levels.

The candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and undergraduate students, conduct high-quality innovative and independent experimental, analytical, and/or computational research, publish research work and results in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences, mentor undergraduate students, and participate in writing research grant proposals.
