Description

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to contribute to cutting-edge research in electrically conductive membranes. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Raed Hashaikeh in the Mechanical Engineering department.

This project focuses on the development and optimization of conductive membranes for applications in desalination, energy generation, and electrochemical processes. The Postdoctoral associate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students, gaining access to state-of-the-art research facilities in the Water Research Center (WRC) at NYUAD.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on the design, fabrication, and characterization of electrically conductive and electrochemical separations.
  • Work alongside researchers in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and physics to develop innovative membrane technologies.
  • Optimize membrane conductivity, stability, and selectivity through advanced materials processing techniques.
  • Utilize characterization tools such as XRD, TGA, DSC, DMA, BET, SEM, EDX, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry to assess membrane properties.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable fabrication methods and explore potential industrial applications.
  • Present findings in lab meetings, departmental seminars, and international conferences.
  • Publish high-quality research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Engage in limited teaching and mentorship activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in membrane science, electrochemical processes, or functional materials.
  • Experience in membrane fabrication and characterization.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • First-author publication experience in relevant research areas.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in electrically conductive polymer membranes, carbon-based materials, or mixed-matrix membranes.
  • Experience with electrochemical characterization techniques (e.g., EIS, CV, potentiometry).
  • Knowledge of functionalized materials for charge transport and ion exchange.
  • Prior experience in organic synthesis or surface modification of membrane materials.
  • Experience in collaborating with international research teams.

Application Instructions:

To apply, please submit the following documents in PDF format:

  • Cover letter (1–2 pages) highlighting your fit for the position
  • Transcript
  • Contact details for at least two references
