Job description

Postdoctoral Associate in Smart Engineering Materials at NYU Abu Dhabi

The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate to work on the development, characterization, and applications of novel self-sensing concrete with dual capabilities of self-healing through the integration of smart technologies.

The successful applicant will work on four main areas leading to the success of this fascinating project:

  1. Design and assess the performance of self-sensing cementitious materials endowed with high sensitivity resistance to temperature and durability under the highly basic environment of concrete.
  2. Develop structural health monitoring networks specifically directed toward the oil and gas industry.
  3. Develop novel self-healing cementitious materials through chemical and/or biomineralization.
  4. Synthesize findings to formulate and assess the performance of self-sensing and self-healing cementitious composites.

The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of research scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Applicants should have experience in developing and characterizing sensors, structural health monitoring systems, and self-healing construction materials. Proficiency in characterizing construction materials, conducting electrical resistivity measurements, and performing advanced data analysis and signal processing (e.g., using MATLAB or Python) is required.

Experience with large-scale concrete testing, modeling, and simulation (e.g., COMSOL, Abaqus) is a plus. Familiarity with AC impedance spectroscopy, electromechanical impedance, wave propagation, and vibroacoustics will be beneficial for this project.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields. Candidates with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities are preferred.

The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and at least three letters of recommendation, all in PDF format.

If you have any questions, please email Dr. Kemal Celik at [contact email].
