Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with current departmental policies and procedures.
  • Interpret physician orders, check, verify, compound and dispense medicines.
  • Identify patients correctly to ensure 5 rights (patient, drug, route, time, dose) and counsel on therapy.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients and relatives about dosages and forms.
  • Provide information about OTC drugs and home healthcare supplies.
  • Assist in diet, exercise, or lifestyle advice to manage conditions.
  • Prepare sterile IV medications under aseptic conditions.
  • Ensure accurate dispensing and timely distribution for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Coordinate pharmacy policies with Chief Pharmacist and nursing staff to meet JCIA standards.
  • Oversee clinic area medication management and inventory updates.
  • Coordinate IT needs for pharmacy service development and obtain medication approvals from insurers.
  • Monitor shortages, reorder stocks, and manage near-expiry drugs; record inventory data.
  • Ensure medicines are stored securely and maintain drug safety and quality.

Job description

The Staff Pharmacist looks after the day to day work of the Pharmacy as per department schedule and is responsible for ensuring the safe, appropriate and cost effective use of medicines. He/she will work collaboratively with other health care professionals and also shoulder the responsibility of Pharmacy In-charge during his/her absence. Complies with the department of pharmacy's code of conduct.

Essential Job functions and Key Accountabilities
  1. Ensure compliance with all current departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Interpretation of physicians orders checking verifying compounding and dispensing medicines.
  3. Identify patient correctly to ensure the 5 rights patient drug route time and dose and counseling patients on the effects dosage and route of administration of their drug treatments.
  4. Maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives ensuring medication reaches the patient in the correct form and dose which include tablet capsule ointment injection inhalers cream and syrup.
  5. Provide information and make recommendations about over‑the‑counter drugs advice patients about durable medical equipment and home healthcare supplies.
  6. Give advice about diet exercise or stress management and help patients manage conditions such as diabetes asthma smoking cessation or blood pressure.
  7. Responds to medication related queries from within the hospital patients their relatives and also recognize and respond to changes in patient s condition.
  8. Prepares the sterile IV medications under aseptic conditions check for its quality and maintain the sterility.
  9. Responsible for accurate dispensing and timely distribution of drugs and medicines for In‑patients and Out‑patients maintain the In‑patient profile.
  10. Answer telephone calls responding to questions or requests.
  11. Coordinate with Chief for developing and implementing mainly the hospital pharmacy policies and procedures to meet with JCIA requirements.
  12. Looks after the Clinic area medication management which includes floor stock inventory amp stock updating in coordination with Chief Pharmacist amp nursing department.
  13. Coordinate with Chief and IT department to update the IT requirements towards the pharmacy service development program.
  14. Getting medication approvals from various insurance companies.
  15. Checking the medicines shortage regularly and requesting for re‑order also regular monitoring of the short expiry medicines rotation of stock for the effective handling of the near expiry drugs and to coordinate with the supervisor for the replacement of the near expiry medicines also check the supply from stores and enters inventory data into the computer system whenever possible Inventory auditing as per hospital policy.
  16. Ensures medicines are stored appropriately and securely to maintain freshness and potency.
  17. Managing the medication error and support the drug utilization information system and being aware of the latest medicine and their availability.
  18. Supervises and checks the work of pharmacy tech pharmacy intern student pharmacist and less experienced staff in the absence of Chief pharmacist.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned by Chief.
  20. Ensures to keep the department secure clean neat and tidy always.

  1. Product distribution dispensing medication with ethics and professionalism—practice within the legal requirement and upholding the ethical principle.
  2. Compounding sterile and non‑sterile product according to the recognized guidelines and standard of practice.
  3. Safe and effective patient care in partnership with the patient and in collaboration with other health professionals meet the patient s health and drug‑related needs to achieve the patient s health goals.
  4. Communication—maintains effective and consistent communication system.
  5. Quality amp safety—pharmacovigilance program to ensure quality safety and integrity of product create a culture of patient safety.
