Job description

Faculty name and title: Joanna Settle Associate Dean Arts and Creative Practices Arts Professor of Theater

The Division

The Arts and Humanities at NYU Abu Dhabi encompass fields of central importance to human culture and creativity. Research and scholarly activity in the Arts and Humanities is creative and collaborative, spanning the disciplines to better understand the human experience through works of art and literature.

The Role

Arts Professor Joanna Settle seeks a research assistant for 3 years to coordinate and contribute to her ongoing research projects and laboratories for performance visual arts and curation. This job is an opportunity to be involved in the development of both creative projects and the infrastructure required to support and advance artistic work. Additionally, this kawader fellow will be involved in supporting/developing Professor Settle's classes and will gain perspective on arts pedagogy.

Professor Settle has several new collaborative projects in the US, Europe, Asia, and UAE in development. As her research assistant, the successful candidate will intersect with these projects and may attend biennials and other creative convenings with Professor Settle as appropriate.

The candidate will also work on individualized research projects under the supervision/mentorship of the supervisor.


Minimum Requirements:

  • BA or BFA in an arts practice field or equivalent experience

  • Demonstration of advanced abilities as a visual or performance artist

  • Ability to calmly and consistently advance collaborative work

  • A close listener

  • Mac computer fluency, Microsoft Excel and Word fluency

Preferred Experience:

  • Participation in highly selective fellowships a plus

  • Experience in live performance a plus

Deliverables:

  • Artist Talk (45 minutes presentation, 15 minutes Q&A)

  • Artistic body(s) of work developed independently / in collaboration with / in parallel to Professor Settle

Responsibilities:

  • Creative projects as assigned

  • Assess feasibility of potential new directions for research as they come up

  • Writing projects as assigned

  • Participation in annual research planning interface with NYUAD to action research plan

  • Support submissions of research applications and grants

  • Weekly management of projects in development

    • Scheduling Coordination

    • Correspondence

    • Research: topical (library/online)

    • Research: material (in locations/travel/rehearsal/online)

    • Budget and reimbursements

  • Event attendance

  • Maintaining Professor Settle's interproject/institution Google calendar

  • Oversight of undergraduate and graduate research assistants

  • Reflect and exchange on new ideas, independent and ongoing research processes, discoveries, and observations
