Job Title: Senior Charge Nurse / Renal Manager

Location: Hospital Location

Reports to: Senior Nursing Leadership / Nursing Executive

Position Summary:

The Senior Charge Nurse / Renal Manager is responsible for overseeing the delivery of age-appropriate, high-quality patient care in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. The role involves leadership, clinical management, and operational duties within the renal dialysis unit. This includes managing a team of nurses, coordinating daily operations, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining the highest standards of clinical care and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • Lead and coordinate nursing staff to ensure optimal patient care delivery.
  • Manage clinical and operational activities, focusing on patient safety and high-quality care.
  • Oversee the dialysis unit, ensuring the safe and effective administration of hemodialysis treatments.
  • Act as a focal point for all nursing-related healthcare issues and escalate issues as necessary.
  • Support nursing executive leadership in setting strategic directions for nursing and midwifery departments.
  • Serve as the primary contact during emergencies, codes, or critical incidents.
  • Provide leadership in conflict management, problem-solving, and critical thinking within the nursing team.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary communication and collaboration to improve patient outcomes.

Clinical Practice Management:

  • Ensure proper patient flow, including efficient bed utilization and staffing based on patient acuity.
  • Maintain a proper skill mix of staff to match patient conditions and requirements.
  • Conduct rounds in the hospital to assess patient needs, solve problems, and guide teams in patient care management.
  • Monitor quality standards of nursing documentation and ensure compliance with hospital policies.
  • Promote continuity of care that is patient-centered and aligned with discharge planning.
  • Oversee staff performance, ensuring adherence to policies and safety standards.
  • Act as a change agent, promoting evidence-based practices and a healthy workplace environment.

Performance Improvement & Risk Management:

  • Foster a culture of performance improvement by monitoring nursing care quality and outcomes.
  • Actively participate in accreditation activities and audits to ensure compliance with international standards.
  • Undertake patient and environmental risk assessments and document corrective actions to improve outcomes.
  • Support educational and research programs within the Nursing Department to advance clinical practice.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and clinical indicators, providing feedback to improve service delivery.

Communication:

  • Ensure effective communication between staff, patients, families, and healthcare teams to ensure coordinated care.
  • Use information technology systems to access, transmit, and document information as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information in line with policies.
  • Liaise with external and internal healthcare providers to maximize patient care efficiency and minimize delays.

Education & Staff Development:

  • Mentor and support staff to enhance clinical and leadership competencies.
  • Promote a learning environment for both patients and healthcare staff, fostering professional growth.
  • Engage in health promotion activities and provide resources to staff to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Ensure nursing staff are supported with continuing education, certifications, and career development opportunities.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the nursing team adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards of care.
  • Maintain staff training in infection control and patient safety goals.
  • Participate in the development of managerial and leadership skills to improve overall nursing services.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and track annual performance criteria and goals for the team.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or equivalent).
  • Licensure: Valid registration as a Registered Nurse, with the appropriate regulatory body.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 6 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting post-qualification.
    • At least 2 years of experience in a Senior Charge Nurse or 3 years in a Charge Nurse position, ideally with experience in renal dialysis.
    • Experience in managing teams and operations within a clinical environment.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and communication skills.
    • Ability to assess and evaluate complex patient care needs.
    • Experience in implementing evidence-based practices and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Proficient in managing healthcare budgets and resources.
    • Knowledge of infection control, patient safety goals, and regulatory compliance.
