Middle Officer – Risk & Compliance (Dry Bulk Shipping)

About the Role :

Our client is seeking a risk-aware, compliance-focused Middle Officer to join their fast-paced freight and dry bulk operations team. This role is critical in safeguarding the integrity of commercial activity by ensuring strict compliance with contracts, operational controls, regulatory standards, and risk frameworks.

You will act as the control tower between commercial execution and back-office support, ensuring that all activities are diligently documented, compliant with internal and external standards, and that commercial exposure is accurately captured, monitored, and mitigated.

Key Responsibilities :

  1. Monitor exposure across voyage and time-charter positions, highlighting any mismatches between contracts, market conditions, and operational realities.
  2. Support freight P&L validation, freight sensitivity analysis, and voyage margin reconciliations.
  3. Ensure internal policies on counterparty exposure, credit limits, and operational thresholds are respected and documented.
  4. Escalate irregularities or contract deviations to senior stakeholders in a timely manner.

Regulatory & Contractual Compliance

  1. Review all freight-related contracts including Charter Parties, COAs, Bills of Lading, LOIs, and fixture recap terms to ensure compliance and commercial accuracy.
  2. Implement and oversee KYC / AML compliance for counterparties in coordination with internal legal and compliance teams.
  3. Ensure compliance with international regulations (OFAC, EU sanctions, etc.) affecting trade lanes, port calls, and counterparties.
  4. Maintain a central archive of contractual documents and voyage-related correspondence in line with audit and regulatory standards.
  5. Ensure timely and accurate issuance, review, and filing of freight documentation including NORs, SOFs, laytime calculations, demurrage / disbursement accounts, and charter invoices.
  6. Coordinate with operations and legal teams to ensure all documentation is defensible and aligns with agreed terms.
  7. Prepare internal compliance checklists and voyage review summaries for management and auditors.
  8. Assist in the preparation of internal risk dashboards and regulatory compliance reports.
  9. Participate in internal audits and external regulatory reviews, ensuring documentation and processes meet required standards.
  10. Act as a control and risk interface between the chartering desk and execution teams.
  11. Review commercial deals post-fixture for compliance and operational risk exposure.
  12. Support the commercial desk by ensuring all operational activities are aligned with internal controls and minimize risk to the business.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 3–6 years' experience in shipping middle office, risk management, or compliance roles within a dry bulk operator, trading company, or shipping group.
  • Familiarity with freight markets, charter parties, laytime, and operational documentation.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory frameworks (OFAC, EU, UN sanctions, KYC / AML) related to global trade and shipping.
  • Experience with risk management systems (e.g., IMOS, Veson, ERP tools) preferred.
  • Strong analytical mindset with a proactive approach to identifying gaps and mitigating risk.
  • Excellent organizational skills, documentation accuracy, and process discipline.
  • Confident communicator able to liaise with commercial, legal, operations, and compliance teams.
  • Thrives in high-pressure environments with tight timelines and evolving priorities.
