What Does a Mechanical Draftsman Do?

1. Assist in preparing mechanical drawings, spools, supports, and joint details in line with project specifications
2. Support the Preparator with MTOs (Material Take-Offs) and maintain drawing records in the department database
3. Update daily work progress in ERP systems such as Mariner or equivalent software
4. Generate and verify material requisitions and ensure quantities, sizes, and grades match project MTOs
5. Provide estimated man-hours for project tasks as per the agreed tariff for supervisory review
6. Submit final job descriptions and updates to invoicing teams for man-hour tracking
7. Maintain complete documentation of completed (sailed) projects according to departmental procedures
8. Collaborate with project teams to ensure accuracy and consistency of engineering drawings
9. Comply with engineering standards, shipyard guidelines, and ASME codes in all tasks

What Are the Key Responsibilities?

1. Create and update technical drawings using AutoCAD 2D/3D and SmartPlant Isometrics
2. Support job identification, scope planning, and spool drawings for fabrication
3. Maintain drawing documentation and ERP records for traceability and quality assurance
4. Coordinate with supervisors and preparators for workflow updates and material requirements
5. Assist in project documentation and post-project technical records archiving

What Skills Are Needed for a Mechanical Draftsman in Dubai?

Education:

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:

• 2-3 years of drafting experience in the marine, fabrication, or oil & gas industry
• OR minimum 5 years of drafting experience in shipyard environments

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D) and SmartPlant Isometrics
• Good understanding of ASME codes and material grades
• Familiarity with ERP software (Mariner or equivalent) and Microsoft Office
• Ability to estimate man-hours and prepare technical documentation

Soft Skills:

• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills
• Effective communication and collaboration across teams
• Proactive in identifying discrepancies and ensuring drawing accuracy
• Capable of working under deadlines and supporting multiple projects
