Position Overview

Based at Pearl British Academy, the role combines lifeguarding, swimming support, pool inspections, student supervision, health and safety compliance, extracurricular activities, and assistance to the wider PE department.

Role Context

The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining a safe, controlled, and supportive swimming environment for pupils, staff, parents, and other authorized pool users. The position requires constant vigilance at poolside together with practical knowledge of emergency response, first aid, CPR, pool operating procedures, and school safeguarding expectations. The role also works closely with swimming coaches, Physical Education teachers, classroom staff, and maintenance teams. Beyond direct lifeguarding duties, the position contributes to swimming lessons, sports events, equipment preparation, extracurricular activities, and wider school programs, making it an important operational and student-safety role within Pearl British Academy.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous supervision of the swimming pool and all users from the designated lifeguard position.
• Ensure children are properly supervised before, during, and after swimming lessons and activities.
• Monitor swimmers closely and respond immediately to unsafe behaviour, distress, injury, or emergency situations.
• Conduct required pool safety checks before and after lessons and record findings accurately.
• Escalate pool defects, safety concerns, water-quality issues, or maintenance requirements to the appropriate team.
• Carry out pool tests in accordance with the school 's Pool Safety Operating Procedure and provided training.
• Read, understand, and follow the Normal Operating Procedure and Emergency Action Plan applicable to the swimming facility.
• Work within ADEK guidelines and school procedures governing aquatic safety and student supervision.
• Follow Health and Safety, COSHH, Risk Assessment, and other relevant safety requirements.
• Inspect safety equipment, operational resources, and poolside materials when requested.
• Complete required safety and operational documentation accurately and on time.
• Set up, move, and dismantle swimming and sports equipment safely in accordance with school induction and procedures.
• Provide emergency assistance, first aid, and CPR response within the scope of certification and training.
• Support swimming coaches and Physical Education teachers during lessons and structured aquatic activities.
• Assist with group activities, demonstrations, and practical swimming instruction where appropriately qualified.
• Support the planning and delivery of engaging PE and swimming sessions.
• Help organize and participate in swimming galas, sports events, competitions, and other school activities.
• Assist teachers and classroom assistants with the care and supervision of pupils around pool areas.
• Provide professional customer service support to pupils, parents, staff, and visitors using the swimming facilities.
• Report operational concerns promptly to the line manager or Swimming Instructor.
• Attend mandatory monthly training sessions to maintain required fitness, knowledge, emergency response capability, and technical skills.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment that supports students ' physical, social, emotional, and academic development.
• Apply the school 's behaviour policy and established operating procedures consistently.
• Promote appropriate conduct, self-control, independence, and respect among pupils.
• Act as a positive role model and demonstrate professional behaviour in all interactions.
• Support Physical Education department activities when poolside lifeguarding duties are not required.
• Assist with extracurricular activities, school outings, sports programs, and events that may take place after school or at weekends.
• Participate in curriculum-related groups, planning activities, resources, and special events where required.
• Maintain ongoing professional development in lifeguarding, swimming instruction, first aid, safeguarding, and aquatic safety.
• Follow all child safeguarding and protection procedures and report concerns through appropriate school channels.

Ideal Profile

Candidates must hold a UAE-approved ADQCC Swimming Coach or Pool Lifeguard Certificate. A valid First Aid Certificate and practical CPR knowledge are required. Applicants should be qualified lifeguards and competent swimming instructors capable of supporting learners with different swimming abilities. The successful candidate must be a proficient swimmer and physically fit enough to perform poolside supervision, emergency response, equipment handling, and outdoor duties. Experience supporting school-age children is highly valuable, particularly in swimming, physical education, sports, coaching, or aquatic safety environments. Strong spoken and written English communication skills are required. Arabic language ability is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, teamwork, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to the safety and well-being of children. Active participation in extracurricular or co-curricular activities is an advantage. The role requires someone who can remain alert for long periods, respond decisively during emergencies, and work collaboratively with teachers, coaches, administrators, and facilities teams.
