Job summary

Wood is seeking an experienced Lead Project Engineer – Shutdown to join our Abu Dhabi team, delivering safe, on-schedule shutdowns within an EPCM project for ADNOC. You will plan, coordinate, and execute engineering and project management activities for shutdown scopes, interfacing with operations, construction, and commissioning teams.

We require 15+ years in oil and gas shutdowns, proven leadership of multi-disciplinary teams, and strong knowledge of ADNOC standards and permit-to-work systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical or related).
  • 15+ years of oil and gas shutdowns/turnarounds in brownfield environments.
  • Proven EPCM project leadership, preferably with ADNOC or similar.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams during high-risk shutdowns.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end engineering and execution planning for shutdown scopes.
  • Coordinate with ADNOC operations, asset teams, and contractors.
  • Ensure deliverables align with milestones and operability requirements.
  • Develop shutdown execution plans, schedules, and resource allocation.
  • Facilitate risk assessments, HAZOP/HAZID, and SIMOPS reviews.
  • Drive interface management across disciplines and contractors.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigations.
  • Ensure adherence to HSE, permits-to-work, and ADNOC protocols.
  • Provide technical leadership and issue resolution on site.
  • Oversee pre-shutdown readiness, monitoring, and close-out activities.
  • Ensure accurate as-built docs and handover packages.

Job Objective

The Lead Project Engineer – Shutdown is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of all engineering and project management activities related to plant shutdowns within a major EPCM project for ADNOC. The role ensures that shutdown scopes are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with ADNOC standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements. The position serves as the key interface between engineering, construction, operations, and commissioning teams to ensure seamless shutdown execution and plant restart.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the end-to-end engineering and execution planning for shutdown scopes including turnaround, tie-ins, brownfield modifications, and critical maintenance activities
  • Coordinate closely with ADNOC operations, asset teams, and contractors to define shutdown scope, priorities, and execution strategies
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables are completed in line with shutdown milestones and support constructability and operability requirements
  • Develop and oversee detailed shutdown execution plans, schedules, and resource allocation in collaboration with planning and construction teams
  • Facilitate risk assessments, HAZOP/HAZID workshops, and SIMOPS reviews to ensure safe shutdown execution in live operating environments
  • Drive interface management across multiple disciplines and contractors to eliminate clashes and ensure efficient work sequencing during shutdown windows
  • Monitor progress against shutdown schedules, identify risks and bottlenecks, and implement mitigation measures to avoid delays
  • Ensure strict adherence to HSE requirements, permit-to-work systems, and ADNOC shutdown protocols
  • Provide technical leadership and decision-making support during shutdown execution, including troubleshooting and resolving site issues
  • Coordinate pre-shutdown readiness reviews, execution monitoring, and post-shutdown close-out activities including lessons learned and performance reporting
  • Ensure all documentation, as-built drawings, and handover packages are completed accurately and in a timely manner

Expected:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline)
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in oil and gas projects with significant exposure to shutdowns/turnarounds in brownfield environments
  • Proven experience in EPCM projects, preferably with ADNOC or similar Middle East operators
  • Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams during major shutdowns with tight schedules and high-risk environments
  • Strong understanding of ADNOC standards, shutdown procedures, and permit-to-work systems
  • Excellent coordination, planning, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple interfaces during critical shutdown windows
  • Strong knowledge of project controls, scheduling tools, and risk management practices
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, contractors, and internal teams
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; knowledge of Arabic is an advantage
