Job description

We are looking to hire an Insect Care giver with the following skills & qualifications :

The Insect Caregiver / Attendant at [Butterfly Park Name] is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of the park's butterfly and insect populations. This role involves feeding, monitoring, and ensuring the health and well-being of various insect species, as well as maintaining their habitats. The Insect Caregiver / Attendant will work closely with biologists and other staff to create a thriving environment for insects and enhance the visitor experience through educational engagement.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Insect Care and Feeding :
  • Prepare and provide food for butterflies and other insects according to established protocols.
  • Monitor insect feeding behaviors and adjust diets as necessary.
  • Maintain clean and safe feeding areas.
  • Health Monitoring :
  • Conduct daily health checks on insect populations, noting any signs of illness or distress.
  • Report health concerns to the Senior Insect Caregiver or Head Biologist promptly.
  • Assist in administering treatments and interventions as directed.
  • Habitat Maintenance :
  • Clean and maintain insect habitats, ensuring a hygienic and suitable environment.
  • Assist in the setup and maintenance of breeding and rearing areas.
  • Collaborate with horticulturists to ensure that plantings support insect health and well-being.
  • Lifecycle Support :
  • Assist in monitoring and supporting all stages of insect life cycles, from eggs to adult insects.
  • Help with the collection and documentation of lifecycle data.
  • Participate in breeding programs as directed by senior staff.
  • Data Collection and Record Keeping :
  • Maintain accurate records of insect care activities, including feeding, health checks, and habitat maintenance.
  • Assist in data collection for research projects and conservation efforts.
  • Ensure records are up-to-date and available for review by senior staff.
  • Visitor Engagement :
  • Provide information and answer questions from visitors about the insects and their care.
  • Assist with educational programs, tours, and demonstrations related to insect biology and conservation.
  • Help create and maintain informative displays and exhibits.
  • Team Collaboration :
  • Work closely with other insect caregivers, biologists, and horticulturists to ensure coordinated care of the insects.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions.
  • Support special projects and events as needed.

Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some coursework in biology, entomology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in animal or insect care, preferably in a zoo, aquarium, or similar setting.
  • Basic knowledge of insect biology and husbandry practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 30 pounds and working in various weather conditions.
  • Working Conditions :
