Fitters are skilled tradespeople responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining mechanical systems and machinery. Their job duties can vary based on their specialization (e.g., mechanical fitter, pipe fitter, maintenance fitter, etc.), but here are the core responsibilities common across most fitter roles:

General Duties of a Fitter

1. Reading and Interpreting Technical Drawings
   • Understanding engineering blueprints, schematics, and manuals
   • Identifying dimensions, tolerances, and part specifications
2. Assembling Mechanical Components
   • Fitting and assembling machine parts using hand tools and power tools
   • Aligning components for proper function and performance
3. Installation of Machinery or Systems
   • Positioning and securing equipment or systems in place (e.g., engines, pumps, conveyors)
   • Connecting components such as pipes, motors, or gears
4. Maintenance and Repairs
   • Inspecting machinery for wear, damage, or misalignment
   • Replacing faulty parts, lubricating systems, and ensuring proper operation
5. Machining and Fabrication
   • Cutting, drilling, or grinding materials to fit using lathes, milling machines, or grinders
   • Shaping and modifying parts as needed for custom fits
