Job description

Responsible for transporting goods from one place to another using heavy or tractor-trailer trucks. Operates trucks with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds per gross vehicle weight.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Deliver goods via a heavy truck, sometimes over intercity routes or spanning several states.
  2. Load and unload cargo.
  3. Record amount and type of cargo being delivered.
  4. Take orders for new deliveries.
  5. Fill up on fuel, clean truck, and wash windows.
  6. Report to a dispatcher any incidents encountered on the road.
  7. Monitor road conditions and watch for traffic congestion.
  8. Follow all applicable traffic laws.
  9. Inspect their trailer before and after the trip, and record any defects they find.
  10. Follow accident procedures if an accident occurs.
  11. Keep a log of their activities.
  12. Report serious mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel.
  13. Keep their truck, and associated equipment, clean and in good working order.
  14. Plan routes using maps or satellite tracking.
  15. Get goods to client on time.
  16. Take rest periods during trip.
  17. Take special precautions while driving.
