Job description

The Health and Safety Officer (HSO) will play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and visitors. The role is dedicated to supporting school-based health and safety management in line with Cognita Middle East policies, Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health System Framework (OSHAD-SF), ADEK regulations, and other relevant local regulations. The HSO will proactively contribute to embedding a positive safety culture and ensuring compliance.

Skills, Experience & Responsibilities:

1. Compliance Monitoring: Monitor compliance with health and safety regulations and guidance set out by local authorities, accrediting bodies, and Cognita ME.
2. Risk Management: Lead the development and implementation of risk assessment and risk management procedures.
3. Training and Development: Ensure the training matrix is up to date and key internal health and safety training topics are delivered to relevant staff members. Support facilitation of external training as necessary.
4. Audits/Inspections/Reviews: Engage with reviewers and inspectors. Monitor findings and ensure action plans are maintained with corrective measures implemented within the required timeframe.
5. Incident Management: Oversee all reported health and safety incidents, conduct investigations or follow-up tasks as required, and ensure reporting processes are followed effectively.
6. Document Control: Manage all health and safety documentation, ensuring information sharing with relevant staff and regular review of documents and policies in line with policy.
7. Health and Safety Committee: Lead the committee, focusing on collaboration, improvement, incident analysis, and corrective actions.
8. Safety Culture: Act as a leader for health and safety practices, promoting a positive safety culture within the organization. Encourage positive reporting and support safety initiatives.

Safeguarding Responsibilities:

1. Strategy: Contribute positively to Safeguarding improvement strategies across Cognita schools, nurseries, and other units.
2. Policy and Compliance: Familiarize with safeguarding policies and procedures; support adherence and awareness.
3. Incident Reporting: Ensure safeguarding concerns are reported through the appropriate platforms, following policies and guidance.
4. Training and Awareness: Complete safeguarding training courses timely.
5. Risk Assessment: Complete risk assessments for your areas of responsibility, seeking training and feedback to mitigate risks.
6. Emergency Response: Support or act as the Emergency Response Lead during emergencies, delivering training, conducting drills, and reporting findings.
7. Collaboration: Collaborate with the Cognita ME Health and Safety Network.
8. Culture: Be a role model for health, safety, and safeguarding practices, promoting a positive and safe organizational culture.
