Head of Asylum and Bails - Lawyer (Onsite, Dubai) – UK & UAE | Boutique Firm

About Us:

Philip Jones Legal is a boutique UK-headquartered law firm specialising in immigration and asylum law with a focus on detention centre work. With a presence across four continents, the firm aims to establish a robust foothold in Dubai.

What You’ll Do:

  • Advise and represent clients in immigration detention on matters including bail applications, asylum claims, and appeals before the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC), Upper Tribunal, and higher courts as appropriate.
  • Prepare and manage legal casework from initial instruction through to conclusion, including drafting witness statements, skeleton arguments, and complex legal submissions.
  • Attend and represent clients at court hearings as required.
  • Instruct UK lawyers to attend on clients in prisons, detention centres and other places where clients may be detained.
  • Liaise with the Home Office, Immigration Authorities, barristers, interpreters, experts, and other relevant agencies to progress cases.
  • Identify and pursue claims for unlawful detention, including advising on eligibility for legal aid and potential compensation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all client interactions, case progress, and outcomes in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Keep abreast of developments in immigration, asylum, and detention law through ongoing training, research, and professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency (LAA) requirements, including billing, file management, and audit standards.
  • Where appropriate, contribute to policy advocacy, strategic litigation, and the development of best practices in detention work.
  • Uphold the highest standards of client care, confidentiality, and ethical practice at all times.

Desired Candidate Profile

Who You Are:

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister, or accredited caseworker (IAAS Level 2 or equivalent), with demonstrable experience in asylum and immigration law, particularly in detention work.
  • Strong knowledge of UK asylum, immigration, and detention law and practice, including bail applications and appeal processes.
  • Experience representing clients at the IAC and preparing cases for higher courts.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable clients, including those with complex needs or experiences of trauma.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a demanding caseload.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in service delivery
  • Experience with judicial review and strategic litigation in the context of immigration detention.
  • Understanding of Legal Aid Agency contract compliance and billing procedures.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff or volunteers.
  • Additional language skills relevant to the client base.
