Job summary

Puffy, a top 5 US mattress brand with AI-first operations, seeks a General Counsel to own the in-house function across consumer-facing compliance, fund documentation, and cross-border structuring. You will lead risk management and establish an audit cadence in partnership with the CEO.

You will negotiate complex fund and investment documents, drive regulatory compliance, and build the legal function to support a $1B+ brand while enjoying remote work with optional Dubai office and visa support.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school; barred in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

Total Annual Package: Up to USD $242,000 + comprehensive benefits (Base salary + monthly performance bonus of up to 10% of base)

Growth path from here is Chief Legal Officer → Cross-functional leadership roles. What takes 4-5 years elsewhere happens in 1-2 here.

Role Overview

Puffy, a market-leading, nine-figure D2C brand and Top 5 US mattress brand with over $1 billion in sales, is hiring a General Counsel to own the in-house legal function across three distinct workstreams with full authority over consumer-facing compliance, fund documentation and custody protocols, cross‑border asset structuring, and outside counsel relationships, reporting directly to the CEO. This role exists to convert legal exposure into documented, managed risk before it reaches the business, building the audit cadence, compliance systems, and counterparty controls that let a Top 5 e‑commerce brand, a family office, and multi‑jurisdictional structuring run without day‑to‑day executive involvement.

The Career Accelerator

This is not a role where you review contracts someone else negotiated and wait for matters to be assigned to you. The scope is scarce: very few General Counsel get simultaneous authority over a Top 5 D2C brand's consumer‑facing legal surfaces, a family office deploying capital into hedge funds, cross-border structuring across multiple international jurisdictions, and a direct line to the CEO with no layers in between.

Your first 12 months: build the Monthly Legal Exposure Audit into the operating rhythm of the business. Run Quarterly Compliance Sweeps across checkout flows, terms of service, arbitration clauses, pricing, and FTC endorsement guidelines against current federal and state regulation. Negotiate hedge fund subscription agreements, side letters, and LP terms before capital is deployed. Stand up Quarterly Fund Documentation Reviews across subscriptions, custody arrangements, loan covenants, and counterparty protocols.

Enforce investment security controls: authorized account whitelists, multi‑party verification, and transfer protocols. Structure asset protection across multiple international jurisdictions. Independently surface five material legal risks nobody assigned you inside 90 days. What You'll Need

• JD from an accredited law school; barred in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

• Comfort operating as a sole legal resource with no legal team to lean on.
• AI fluency: actively uses AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or equivalent) for legal research, drafting, and risk identification — this will be tested during the interview process.
• Proven track record of proactively identifying legal risks that were not assigned.
• Comfort working across multiple international jurisdictions and coordinating cross‑border legal work.
• Independent judgment — you act on what you see, not what you're told to look at

Good-to-Have

• Background in corporate/commercial law at a mid‑market or BigLaw firm before transitioning in‑house.
• Exposure to fund finance, LP agreements, or NAV-based lending
• Familiarity with consumer protection law (FTC, state-level statutes) or DTC e‑commerce regulatory environment.
• Experience supporting corporate transactions or due diligence processes.
• High-net-worth or family office client experience.
