Role Overview: The Secondary Inclusion Teacher supports students with Additional Learning Needs (ALNs) in Grades 6-12, ensuring they have equitable access to the curriculum and develop essential academic, social-emotional, and executive functioning skills. The role involves collaborating with classroom teachers, therapists, Inclusion Learning Assistants, Individual Assistants, and parents/guardians to implement inclusive teaching strategies, differentiated instruction, and assessment accommodations. The Inclusion Teacher also applies Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and adaptive teaching strategies to support meaningful participation and independence for students in a diverse secondary learning environment.

The role involves collaborating with classroom teachers, therapists, Inclusion Learning Assistants, Individual Assistants, and parents/guardians to implement inclusive teaching strategies, differentiated instruction, and assessment accommodations. Key Responsibilities:

Inclusive Instruction & Student Support
  • Develop and implement individualized interventions that support literacy, numeracy, executive functioning, and social-emotional skills across different subject areas.
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure all students can access, engage with, and express their learning effectively.
  • Modify curriculum, assessments, and instructional methods to meet the needs of students with ALNs, ensuring they are appropriately supported in both general education and modified courses.
  • Use assistive technology, adaptive strategies, and structured supports to enhance student engagement, accessibility, and independence.
  • Implement assessment accommodations, including extended time, alternative assessment formats, and assistive technology, to provide equitable learning opportunities.
  • Conduct regular progress monitoring, using student data to adjust instruction and intervention strategies.
Collaboration with Inclusion Learning Assistants (ILAs), Therapists & Individual Assistants
  • Provide coaching, training, and oversight to Inclusion Learning Assistants, ensuring they implement inclusive strategies effectively in secondary classrooms.
  • Assign and coordinate ILAs responsibilities based on subject-specific needs, student learning goals, and classroom expectations.
  • Work closely with therapists (speech and language, occupational, and behavioural) to integrate therapy recommendations into academic instruction and student support.
  • Support Individual Assistants in implementing accommodations while promoting student independence and self-advocacy skills.
  • Guide ILAs and Individual Assistants in applying effective differentiation, behaviour management techniques, and executive functioning strategies for secondary learners.

Parental Engagement & Communication

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with parents and guardians, ensuring collaboration in supporting student learning and transition planning.
  • Conduct regular parent meetings, workshops, and progress reviews to provide families with strategies for academic support, executive functioning skills, and self-regulation techniques.
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents regarding student progress, intervention plans, and accommodations.
Professional Growth & School Initiatives
  • Engage in continuous professional development in inclusive education, secondary differentiation, assistive technology, and intervention strategies.
  • Actively contribute to school-wide inclusion programs, professional learning communities, and staff training sessions.
  • Stay updated on best practices in inclusive secondary education, ensuring alignment with ADEK s Inclusion Policy and school-wide initiatives.
  • Support students with ALNs in preparing for transition pathways, including college readiness, vocational training, or alternative education routes.

Please note: Candidates who do not meet the below criteria will not be considered for this role

To be considered for the role you must have:

  • A Bachelor s degree in Special Education OR PGCE or equivalent qualification in Education and a SEN Diploma
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in Secondary SEN teaching
  • A clean enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services check or police check
