Job summary

Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. in the Gulf region seeks an Energy Storage Technical Leader to apply EPRI expertise to cost effective, reliable, and safe utility-scale BESS, solar PV, and hybrids.

You will guide design, inspection, and commissioning with utilities, developers, EPCs, and off takers. You will review designs, validate performance, assess standards compliance, and lead site visits while communicating findings to technical and executive audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or power systems engineering.
• 10+ years in design, inspection, commissioning, or operation of utility-scale solar PV and BESS; 5+ years in BESS.
• Experience with standards and grid codes (UL, NFPA, IEC, ISO).
• Exposure to applied research in BESS or solar via modeling or testing.

Responsibilities

• Review and optimize BESS designs: architecture, sizing, equipment, controls, and safety.
• Review PV and hybrid (PV plus BESS) designs, including interconnection.
• Assess specifications, layouts, equipment selection, and plant configurations for cost and efficiency.
• Validate performance, yield, and dispatch models and propose corrections.
• Evaluate EPC deliverables, test plans, FAT, and SAT.
• Identify risks and recommend technical improvements.
• Conduct site visits and support inspections and commissioning.
• Track regional project activity and engage stakeholders.
• Communicate findings to technical and executive audiences.
• Develop replicable solutions that improve plant affordability, reliability, performance, safety, and circularity.
• Represent EPRI research at technical conferences and in meetings with stakeholders and member companies.

Energy Storage - Technical Leader | EPRI Gulf Energy Research

EPRI is seeking an Energy Storage Technical Leader to apply EPRI research and expertise to cost effective, reliable, and safe utility-scale battery energy storage (BESS), solar PV, and hybrid plants across the Gulf region and beyond. The role requires strong experience in design, construction inspection, commissioning, and grid integration, with the ability to engage developers, EPCs, utilities, and off takers.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and optimize BESS designs: architecture, sizing, equipment, augmentation, controls, and safety
• Review PV and hybrid (PV plus BESS) designs, including interconnection
• Assess specifications, layouts, equipment selection, and plant configurations against relevant standards and for cost and efficiency
• Validate performance, yield, and dispatch models (e.g. PVsyst, Homer) and propose corrections
• Evaluate EPC deliverables, test plans, engineering studies, FAT, and SAT
• Identify risks and recommend technical improvements
• Conduct site visits and support inspections and commissioning
• Track regional project activity and engage key stakeholders
• Communicate findings to technical and executive audiences through reports and deliverables
• Develop replicable solutions that improve plant affordability, reliability, performance, safety, and circularity
• Represent EPRI research at technical conferences and in meetings with stakeholders and member companies

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or power systems engineering; Master's preferred

Experience: 10+ years in design, inspection, commissioning, or operation of utility-scale solar PV and BESS, of which 5+ years in BESS is a must; wind experience is a plus

Multiple demonstrable projects with a developer, EPC, inspection and commissioning provider, or utility

Evaluating compliance with international standards and local grid codes (UL, NFPA, IEC, ISO)

Exposure to applied research in BESS or solar through technology, modeling, or testing

Required Skills

• Strong understanding of BESS, PV, and hybrid plant design
• Familiarity with HV/MV systems, lines, substations, SCADA, and plant controls
• Experience with plant control strategies (e.g. AGC, curtailment, storage dispatch)
• Competence in interpreting performance models and system studies
• Clear written and verbal communication for technical and executive audiences
• Regional focus with ability to apply global best practices

Additional Qualification

Must be eligible to obtain visas for travel within the GCC, China, the EU, and the United States.
