Job description

The candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geography and planning at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD). Courses are delivered in French (Bachelor level) and English (Master level). Teaching duties include lectures, tutorials, and supervising student research and projects. Full Professors, Assistant, and Associate Professors have a service load of 192 contact hours per academic year and are expected to engage in related duties each semester, including grading, invigilation, and office hours. Teaching workload reduction may be granted for research or administrative tasks.

The candidate should actively participate in research aligned with the institution's strategic objectives, leading their own projects and collaborating with local and international partners. Collaboration with faculty, participation in departmental activities, committee service, and engagement in university life are also expected.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Research & Conferences

• Conduct individual and collaborative research to meet university and research council objectives, enhancing the university’s reputation.
• Identify funding sources, prepare proposals, and manage resources to achieve research goals.
• Publish research findings and present at conferences to disseminate ideas, establish networks, and stay updated with recent developments.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students, supporting their development.

Lecturing

• Deliver courses ensuring student learning outcomes and teaching excellence, including preparing materials and adapting to student needs.
• Assess student work, provide feedback, and support student progress.
• Develop project-based and research-oriented teaching methods.

Student Counselling

• Provide academic and career guidance, referring students to appropriate services when needed.
• Build positive relationships with students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
• Advise on internships and job opportunities; mentor graduate students.

Course Assessment & Improvement

• Conduct self-evaluation and incorporate student feedback to improve courses.

Administrative Work

• Collaborate with departments on university functions like recruitment, admissions, and resource management.
• Represent the department on committees and task forces.

Policies and Procedures

• Follow departmental policies and standard operating procedures.

Related Assignments

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Line Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS:

• PhD required, recognized by the relevant authority (with specific recognition if obtained outside the French system).
• Proficiency in French and English is mandatory.
• At least 5 years of teaching and research experience in higher education, including PhD supervision.
• Ability to conduct high-quality research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present at academic events.
• Expertise in urban planning, stakeholder engagement, and securing research funding.
