Mechanical Design Manager

The Mechanical Design Manager will effectively manage the successful design of the Edgnex brand, adhering to principles and timescales, with a focus on effective cost management and maintaining required quality levels to ensure successful project completion. The role involves operating autonomously within the design function from pre-design through to the completion of RIBA stages 2 to 5, under the guidance of the Director of Design. The manager may also act as the main point of contact throughout pre-design, design, and handover phases within the Damac team.

The role emphasizes key mechanical developments in the data center industry, integrating these into the concept and feasibility stages to enhance the product for Edgnex data centers worldwide. As a senior leader, the candidate may lead and manage a team of design managers, engineers, and trainees, guiding them in mechanical disciplines and monitoring their work quality. The role also involves stakeholder management to ensure clear understanding and alignment of design and development processes, including estimates of timelines and costs by external consultants.

Job role functions :

The Mechanical Design Manager will support various departments such as Planning, Procurement, Quantity Surveying, and Construction. Responsibilities include :

  • Developing mechanical designs at concept, cost estimation, budgeting, and selecting equipment and materials for new and existing sites.
  • Developing designs and selecting manufacturers for mechanical long-lead items for procurement.
  • Inputting and developing mechanical design schedules for projects.
  • Coordinating all mechanical design activities to ensure timely delivery, liaising with procurement, capital markets, sales, operations, consultants, and contractors.
  • Assisting with mechanical contract documentation for general and sub-contractors.
  • Performing technical evaluations of consultants and contractors for performance, quality, and compliance.
  • Working with Procurement on project budgets.
  • Ensuring project closure related to mechanical systems.
  • Reviewing change requests impacting mechanical design.
  • Managing defect resolution with site teams and engineers.
  • Checking project documentation against design concepts for accuracy and consistency.
  • Developing and supporting testing and commissioning activities.
  • Supporting construction management regarding project costs and design adherence.

Qualifications & Experience :

  • Experience with Data Center and large mechanical projects; project management experience required.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of design experience, especially in critical systems and infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, CFD, and related software.
  • Ability to manage the entire design process and mitigate risks effectively.
  • Strong project issue management skills.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality designs within budget constraints.
  • Preference for candidates experienced with CFD modeling tools in early design phases.
