Job Purpose
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Staff Nurse is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care. The Staff Nurse supports professional nursing practice across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The Staff Nurse will understand, support, and promote the mission, vision, and values of SSMC; provides age-appropriate patient care according to the Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body. The Staff Nurse will adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and UAE.
Unit-Specific Job Roles
- Demonstrates competence with the care and assessment of patients in sepsis and septic shock, including the prevention of complications.
- Implements the sepsis pathway with the multidisciplinary team and demonstrates knowledge of the nurses’ role within this pathway.
- Demonstrates knowledge on noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring.
- Demonstrates knowledge on noninvasive ventilation.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medication indications, contraindications, effects, and side effects.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competence with the care and management of deteriorating patients and the prevention of complications.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the prevention of CLABSI and compliance with bundles.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competence in the prevention of CAUTI and compliance with bundles.
- Monitors and records symptoms and changes in patients’ conditions and shares information with the physician (MRP).
- Monitors HDU patients for changes indicating sepsis or shock and implements appropriate escalation and interventions.
- Administers intravenous fluids and medications as per physician’s orders.
- Monitors patients’ fluid intake and output to detect imbalances.
- Monitors all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
Responsibilities
- Assessment and Diagnosis: Collects and analyzes assessment data to determine diagnosis/issues, including physical, psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs. Uses evidence-based assessment techniques, validates diagnoses with patients, families, and the healthcare team, and documents findings.
- Planning and Outcomes Identification: Identifies expected outcomes, develops a plan addressing health promotion, restoration, and maintenance, involving patient and family, and applies evidence-based practices. Modifies plans based on ongoing assessments and documents outcomes as measurable goals.
- Implementation and Care Delivery: Implements care plans in partnership with patients and teams, performs treatments, administers medications, documents care, and communicates across care levels, demonstrating resource awareness and cost-effectiveness.
- Health Teaching and Promotion: Uses appropriate teaching strategies, supports healthy lifestyles, seeks feedback, and documents education provided.
- Evaluation: Evaluates progress, understanding, and response to care plans, involving patients and families, and ensures thorough handovers and communication about patient status.
- Evidence-based Practice and Research: Incorporates current evidence and research into practice, participates in research activities, shares findings, and engages in performance improvement projects.
- Leadership: Demonstrates leadership behaviors, acts as a role model, supervises staff, participates in organizational decision-making, and promotes a safe, organized work environment.
Accountabilities
- Maintains professional ethics, advocates for patients, questions practices for safety, reports unethical or illegal practices, evaluates own practice, considers environmental and organizational impacts, and utilizes current resources and technology.
- Promotes a safe and environmentally healthy practice environment, mentors team members, and responds to emergencies per organizational policies.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Required: Minimum 2 years of clinical experience post-qualification in an appropriate setting. Experience waiver for UAE nursing graduates after internship completion.
Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a 2-year nursing diploma with registration as a Registered Nurse from recognized countries (Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia) and a valid license, plus BLS. Desired: ACLS, PALS relevant to specialty area.
