Job Description
- Organize technical support for the science department, including assisting in practical classes and demonstrations, preparing resources, assembling apparatus, and clearing away promptly after each lesson.
- Provide technical advice to teachers and students.
- Conduct risk assessments for practical activities.
- Maintain an orderly working environment in the prep rooms and laboratories.
- Participate in the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and long-term projects, offering professional guidance and support to pupils and teachers on practical aspects of the curriculum.
- Design, construct, and modify apparatus.
- Set up and care for plant and animal collections.
- Prepare standard solutions, purify chemicals, and treat waste.
- Stay updated with health and safety requirements and developments in practical science by consulting relevant literature and attending courses.
- Provide health and safety advice to technical staff, teachers, and students, including the disposal of hazardous waste and secure storage of hazardous materials.
- Perform safety checks on fume cupboards, pressure vessels, and first-aid kits.
- Organize, store, and check the condition of chemicals and equipment; repair or replace equipment as needed.
- Ensure the department's resources are maintained to the required standards.
- Liaise with school operations teams to ensure labs are clean and equipment functions properly.
- Ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment, suggesting alternatives for suitability and economy.
- Maintain stock control and keep appropriate records.
Skills
- Education, Training, and Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant science subject.
Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge of safety procedures in a laboratory, working with practical equipment, and preparing chemicals for practicals.
- Well-organized and proactive.
- Experience working in a practical setting such as a school, hospital, laboratory, or industry.
