EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company) is the sole procurer and supplier of water and electricity in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. EWEC drives the planning, forecasting, purchasing, and system despatch services of water and electricity. EWEC fulfils these vital responsibilities through the short-term and long-term balancing of bulk supply and demand for distribution companies and authorities in Abu Dhabi and other Emirates. EWEC is supporting the government of Abu Dhabi and the government of the UAE by enabling the reduction of cost whilst also providing the increased security of supply that comes from a cleaner, larger, and more integrated system.

EWEC is mandated to implement strategic initiatives that will achieve the 60 per cent clean energy target outlined in the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy's (DoE) Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for Electricity Production in Abu Dhabi, in addition to enabling the achievement of UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, UAE Energy Strategy by 2050, and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. We are looking to hire a Legal Counsel - UAEN, to join EWEC.

Below is an outline of the role and responsibilities.

The Legal Counsel is responsible for providing general commercial in-house legal advice, support and representation across the organisation. Ensuring all activities are completed in accordance with applicable laws by effectively managing and administering the legal framework and compliance requirements of the organisation to ensure continuity of business.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide general legal advice, support and representation to EWEC's functions in coordination with the Deputy General Counsel/General Counsel. This includes being the business partner to internal departments - Finance and Corporate Operations, Technology and HC Directorate.
  • Provide ad hoc legal advice, support and representation to functions regarding drafting and entering contracts.
  • Provide inputs and support to Regulation and Compliance on legal issues related to compliance with applicable sector laws and guidelines and draft remedial actions where necessary.
  • Identify and evaluate legal risks; develop and implement mitigation measures in collaboration with Risk and Business Continuity departments
  • Work with the Legal & Regulation Department to draft, track and develop, precedent agreements to support the needs of the business.
  • Support the representation of EWEC during external consultations or negotiations, taking the role of negotiator in legal matters where necessary.
  • Prepare and draft legal opinions, memoranda and other legal briefing documents internally between EWEC and business partners, contractors and clients with a view to ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Organise legal documents, data and reports for management as needed for internal or external consideration.
  • Implement all relevant department policies, processes, and procedures so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner
  • Execute the continuous improvement of systems, processes and practices taking into account international leading practice and changes in business environment and leveraging insights.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Law or related field
  • Master's degree in Law or related field is preferred
  • Accredited lawyer

Minimum of 4 years of extensive experience in legal, preferably in a:

  • Diverse/multi-cultural business industry (obtained from medium to large organisation);
  • Multi-national company.
  • International Law Firm;
  • Energy and utility sector preferred
