Job description

Job Purpose
The HVAC Draftsman is responsible for producing detailed HVAC system drawings based on the design specifications provided by HVAC Engineers. Reporting to the Senior HVAC Engineer, the role involves preparing accurate and clear HVAC layouts, including ducting, piping, air handling systems, and other mechanical elements, ensuring compliance with local regulations and project specifications. The HVAC Draftsman will work closely with the engineering and construction teams to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of HVAC designs for installation and construction.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Drafting & Documentation:
    * Prepare detailed HVAC drawings for air conditioning, ventilation, heating, and cooling systems, including duct layouts, pipe routing, equipment locations, and other system components.
    * Revise and update drawings based on design changes, feedback, and coordination issues.
    * Produce accurate layout drawings for HVAC components such as air handling units (AHU), VAV boxes, diffusers, and exhaust systems using AutoCAD, Revit, or other drafting software.
    * Ensure HVAC drawings comply with local codes, regulations (e.g., ADDC, ADM), and project specifications.
  2. Coordination & Collaboration:
    * Collaborate with HVAC Engineers to translate design concepts into technical drawings that meet performance requirements.
    * Work with other disciplines (e.g., electrical, plumbing, structural) to ensure that HVAC systems are properly integrated with the overall building design.
    * Assist in the preparation of as-built drawings for HVAC systems after installation to reflect any changes or modifications during construction.
  3. Quality Control & Accuracy:
    * Review HVAC drawings to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to design intent.
    * Verify that all dimensions, symbols, and annotations are correct to prevent errors during installation.
    * Ensure compliance with HVAC standards, energy efficiency requirements, and best practices in system design and layout.
  4. Technical Support:
    * Provide technical support by preparing diagrams, schematics, and system layouts that assist the HVAC engineers in design, analysis, and installation.
    * Assist in the preparation of technical documentation for submittals, inspections, and system validation.

Job Requirements

  1. Qualifications:
    * Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
    * Proficiency in AutoCAD, with experience in Revit being a plus.
    * Knowledge of MEP systems and the ability to interpret and execute mechanical designs accurately.
    * Strong understanding of basic mechanical sizing calculations, including piping systems, ductwork, and fire-fighting systems.
    * Fluency in English (both written and spoken).
  2. Experience:
    * Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Mechanical Draftsman in MEP construction projects.
    * Experience working with design engineers and assisting in creating accurate mechanical drawings for large-scale projects.
    * Previous experience with Revit and AutoCAD in MEP projects is essential.
  3. Knowledge & Skills:
    * HVAC Drafting & Design - Expertise in drafting HVAC systems, including air distribution systems, ducting layouts, chilled water systems, ventilation systems, and equipment placement.
    * AutoCAD & Revit MEP - Proficient in AutoCAD for 2D HVAC drawings and Revit MEP for 3D modeling and BIM integration for HVAC systems.
    * Ductwork Design - Knowledge of designing duct layouts, sizing, and airflow management for optimal system efficiency.
    * Air Handling Units (AHUs) & FCUs - Drafting the placement and connections of air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units (FCUs), and other HVAC equipment.
    * Load Calculations & Sizing - Assisting engineers in performing heat load calculations, airflow calculations, and duct sizing for HVAC systems.
    * HVAC System Integration - Coordinating HVAC designs with other MEP systems such as plumbing, fire protection, and electrical.
    * Energy Efficiency & Sustainability - Knowledge of designing energy-efficient HVAC systems, implementing sustainable practices, and ensuring systems meet green building standards (e.g., LEED).
    * Control Systems & DDC - Familiarity with Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and other control systems for HVAC optimization and automation.
    * Revisions & Updates - Ensuring that drawings are updated regularly, and maintaining proper documentation and version control for HVAC designs.
