About the Job

We are seeking a creative and highly skilled Conversational Character Designer to design natural, distinctive and engaging conversations for AI-driven characters, digital humans and virtual personas.

The successful candidate will shape how synthetic characters speak, listen, respond, ask questions, express emotions and maintain their unique voice throughout interactions. This is a cross-disciplinary role combining dialogue design, character development, storytelling, psychology and conversational AI.

You will work closely with AI engineers, character designers, writers, behavioral specialists and experience designers to transform character identities into compelling conversational experiences that feel natural, context-aware and consistent over both short and long-term interactions.

Responsibilities

• Design conversational identities and dialogue systems for AI characters, digital humans and virtual personas.
• Define each character's unique voice, vocabulary, tone, rhythm, communication style and conversational habits.
• Translate character personality, background, motivations and worldview into distinctive conversational behavior.
• Create dialogue frameworks that determine how characters initiate, maintain, redirect and conclude conversations.
• Design conversational flows for introductions, everyday interactions, emotional conversations, conflict, storytelling, problem-solving and other scenarios.
• Write and develop sample dialogues that establish the character's voice and conversational identity.
• Define how characters ask questions, express opinions, disagree, explain ideas, show uncertainty and respond to unexpected input.
• Design emotional communication patterns, including empathy, enthusiasm, hesitation, humor, concern, frustration and other appropriate emotional expressions.
• Develop conversational rules that maintain character consistency across different topics and interaction contexts.
• Design long-term conversational continuity, including references to previous interactions, user preferences and relationship history.
• Collaborate with behavioral designers to align dialogue with the character's emotional states, motivations and behavioral rules.
• Work with AI engineers to translate conversational concepts into prompts, system instructions, response guidelines and AI behavior specifications.
• Develop conversation examples and test cases for training, evaluating and refining AI character responses.
• Review AI-generated conversations and identify problems such as generic language, repetitive responses, inappropriate tone, broken context or character drift.
• Create edge-case conversations to test how characters respond to ambiguity, sensitive situations, unexpected questions and conflicting conversational goals.
• Develop dialogue guidelines, character voice bibles and conversational style documentation.
• Design multilingual or culturally adaptive conversational patterns when required.
• Collaborate with voice and performance teams to ensure that written dialogue can be effectively delivered through speech, voice synthesis and performance.
• Conduct conversational testing with users and analyze feedback to improve engagement, clarity, authenticity and character consistency.
• Research emerging approaches in conversational AI, AI agents, synthetic characters, voice interfaces and interactive storytelling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Creative Writing, Linguistics, Communication, Psychology, Performing Arts, Screenwriting, Game Design, Interaction Design, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.
• At least 3–5 years of experience in dialogue writing, conversational design, narrative design, character development, game writing, conversational AI or a related field.
• Demonstrable ability to create distinctive character voices and believable dialogue.
• Strong understanding of conversation structure, storytelling, human communication and interpersonal dynamics.
• Excellent writing and editing skills, with particular strength in dialogue and character voice.
• Understanding of personality, motivation, emotion and how they influence communication.
• Experience designing dialogue for games, interactive media, virtual characters, chatbots, AI assistants or digital humans is highly desirable.
• Understanding of generative AI, large language models, conversational AI or AI-powered agents.
• Ability to design structured conversational systems rather than relying only on individual dialogue lines.
• Experience developing dialogue flows, conversation trees, response guidelines or conversational specifications.
• Strong ability to maintain consistency in character voice across long conversations and multiple scenarios.
• Understanding of prompt design, AI response evaluation or conversational testing is an advantage.
• Experience with voice interfaces, speech technology, voice acting or performance is a plus.
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with technical and creative teams.
• Fluency in English; additional languages and multilingual dialogue experience are an asset.
• Portfolio demonstrating dialogue writing, character voice development, conversational design, interactive storytelling, AI conversations or related work is strongly preferred.
