Role Context

The Consultant Physician – Psychiatry will provide specialist mental health care for patients with acute, complex, and long‑term psychiatric conditions. This role requires careful clinical judgment, strong risk assessment capability, safe psychotropic medication management, and the ability to communicate clearly with Arabic‑speaking patients and families. Working with psychologists, social workers, nurses, primary care physicians, and allied health professionals, the consultant will support safe recovery pathways, improve patient stability, and contribute to high‑quality mental health services in a multicultural clinical setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of mental health disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, personality disorders, and related psychiatric conditions.
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, mental status examinations, clinical interviews, risk assessments, and ongoing treatment reviews.
• Manage acute psychiatric presentations as well as long‑term mental health conditions requiring structured follow‑up and continuity of care.
• Prescribe, review, and monitor psychotropic medications safely and effectively according to patient needs, treatment response, side effects, and best clinical practice.
• Deliver inpatient, outpatient, and emergency psychiatric care for patients requiring assessment, stabilization, crisis support, or continued mental health management.
• Provide psychotherapy, supportive counselling, psychoeducation, and behavioral guidance where appropriate.
• Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, nurses, primary care doctors, neurologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated patient care.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, treatment planning meetings, discharge planning, and complex risk reviews.
• Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and clinical standards in psychiatric practice, including patient confidentiality, consent, safeguarding, and professional boundaries.
• Contribute to clinical governance, audits, quality improvement initiatives, patient safety reviews, and service development activities.
• Provide supervision, teaching, and training to junior doctors, residents, nurses, psychologists, and mental health staff.
• Promote mental health awareness, patient education, relapse prevention, and early intervention strategies.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including assessment records, medication plans, risk notes, progress updates, referral letters, and follow‑up recommendations.
• Follow UAE medical licensing expectations, including MOHAP requirements where applicable for Sharjah‑based clinical service.

Ideal Profile

• Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• Board certification in Psychiatry is mandatory.
• UK CCT, MRCPsych, or equivalent Western training is strongly preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist.
• Fluency in Arabic and English is required or strongly preferred depending on patient population.
• Strong experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care.
• Ability to manage complex and high‑risk psychiatric cases with sound clinical judgment.
• Experience in emergency psychiatry, medication management, psychotherapy support, and multidisciplinary mental health care.
• Strong understanding of cultural sensitivity in mental health care.
• Excellent communication, leadership, documentation, counselling, and interpersonal skills.
• Eligibility for UAE medical licensing is required, with MOHAP eligibility preferred for Sharjah‑based clinical practice.
