Role Context The Consultant Pediatric Interventional Radiologist will provide advanced image-guided care for infants, children, and adolescents requiring diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that reduce the need for open surgery. The role combines pediatric imaging expertise, procedural precision, radiation safety, peri-procedural assessment, and collaboration with multiple pediatric specialties. Through minimally invasive techniques, the consultant will help improve recovery times, reduce procedural risk, and strengthen treatment options for complex pediatric conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and interpret pediatric diagnostic imaging relevant to interventional case planning and follow-up.
- Deliver image-guided minimally invasive procedures specifically adapted to neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients.
- Perform vascular interventions using ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT, and other clinically appropriate imaging modalities.
- Undertake non-vascular image-guided procedures including biopsies, aspirations, and drainage interventions.
- Establish and manage pediatric vascular access for patients requiring diagnostic, therapeutic, or long-term treatment support.
- Perform percutaneous drainage procedures for complex pediatric collections and related conditions.
- Participate in diagnosis and interventional management of vascular malformations and other congenital vascular abnormalities.
- Support pediatric tumor management through image-guided biopsy and interventional oncology procedures where appropriate.
- Conduct careful pre-procedure evaluation, including review of imaging, laboratory findings, clinical history, and procedural risk.
- Provide post-procedure assessment and structured follow-up to identify complications and evaluate treatment outcomes.
- Adapt procedural techniques according to patient age, body size, developmental needs, and clinical condition.
- Work closely with pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, oncologists, anesthetists, intensivists, and other specialists managing complex cases.
- Participate in multidisciplinary pediatric meetings, treatment planning discussions, and case conferences.
- Apply pediatric-specific radiation protection principles and dose optimization strategies during all fluoroscopic and CT-guided procedures.
- Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique, procedural safety standards, and evidence-based interventional protocols.
- Document consultations, procedural findings, technical details, complications, outcomes, and follow-up recommendations accurately.
- Contribute to departmental clinical governance, morbidity review, quality improvement, and patient-safety initiatives.
- Participate in teaching and supervision of residents, fellows, radiographers, and other clinical staff where required.
- Support clinical research, audit activity, protocol development, and continuing professional education in pediatric interventional radiology.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS, MD, or equivalent recognized medical degree.
- Recognized Specialist or Consultant qualification in Radiology.
- Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Pediatric Interventional Radiology is highly desirable.
- Valid UAE healthcare authority license or eligibility to obtain the appropriate consultant license.
- Significant clinical experience in pediatric diagnostic radiology and image-guided interventional procedures.
- Demonstrated capability managing neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients requiring minimally invasive procedures.
- Strong practical experience in pediatric vascular and non-vascular interventions.
- Proven expertise with ultrasound-guided, CT-guided, and fluoroscopy-guided procedures.
- Experience performing pediatric vascular access, image-guided biopsies, and percutaneous drainage procedures.
- Familiarity with vascular malformation treatment and complex congenital vascular conditions.
- Experience supporting pediatric tumor interventions or pediatric interventional oncology is advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of pediatric radiation protection, dose optimization, and imaging safety.
- Ability to evaluate procedural risk and make sound clinical decisions in complex pediatric cases.
- Excellent communication with patients, families, referring physicians, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
