Role Context
The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Transplant Surgery will provide advanced surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents with complex congenital heart disease and end-stage cardiac conditions requiring transplantation or other major interventions. The role combines congenital cardiac surgery, transplant decision-making, donor and recipient assessment, mechanical circulatory support, critical care collaboration, and long-term program development. The consultant will contribute to improving survival and surgical outcomes while helping strengthen highly specialized pediatric cardiac and transplant services.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform complex congenital heart operations in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
- Undertake high-risk neonatal cardiac procedures and corrective or palliative surgery for complex congenital abnormalities.
- Perform redo pediatric cardiac operations where previous surgical intervention has created additional anatomical or technical complexity.
- Participate actively in pediatric heart transplantation programs from clinical evaluation through operative transplantation and post-operative care.
- Contribute to donor heart assessment and suitability decisions alongside transplant cardiology and multidisciplinary transplant teams.
- Evaluate potential pediatric transplant recipients and support selection decisions based on clinical condition, cardiac function, comorbidities, and expected outcomes.
- Perform pediatric heart transplantation procedures according to approved transplant protocols and surgical standards.
- Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment and surgical planning for transplant and complex congenital cardiac cases.
- Work closely with pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, transplant physicians, nurses, and allied specialists during perioperative care.
- Manage critically ill pediatric cardiac patients requiring complex surgical decision-making and intensive postoperative surveillance.
- Support ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support strategies for patients with severe cardiac or cardiopulmonary failure.
- Participate in decisions involving ventricular assist devices and bridging strategies where appropriate to the transplant program.
- Monitor post-transplant recovery and collaborate on management of surgical complications, graft function, infection risks, and other postoperative concerns.
- Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, transplant selection meetings, operative planning sessions, and complex case reviews.
- Maintain rigorous adherence to surgical safety, infection prevention, sterile technique, quality standards, and transplant governance requirements.
- Supervise fellows, residents, junior surgeons, and surgical trainees while promoting safe operative practice and structured professional development.
- Maintain accurate operative reports, transplant records, consent documentation, clinical notes, and follow-up information.
- Contribute to clinical audits, transplant outcome reviews, research projects, publications, academic programs, and continuing medical education.
- Support quality improvement and development of pediatric cardiac surgery and heart transplantation services.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS or an equivalent recognized medical degree.
- Board Certification or Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery with subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
- Advanced formal training or substantial clinical experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
- Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing.
- Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
- Demonstrated experience working within established pediatric cardiac transplant programs.
- Strong operative expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery and complex congenital heart disease.
- Proven experience managing high-risk pediatric cardiac surgical patients across the perioperative pathway.
- Experience in donor evaluation, recipient selection, heart transplantation, and postoperative transplant management.
- Familiarity with ECMO and advanced mechanical circulatory support is highly desirable.
- Exposure to high-volume pediatric cardiac or transplant centers is strongly preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to make timely decisions in critically ill pediatric cardiac patients.
- Excellent leadership, operative, communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Academic involvement through research, publications, teaching, program development, or clinical audit is advantageous.
