Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.

• Valid Consultant License or eligibility for consultant-level licensing in the United Arab Emirates.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex congenital heart surgery in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.

Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon - Transplantation will provide advanced surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents with complex congenital and acquired cardiac disease. The position carries significant responsibility for pediatric heart transplantation, neonatal cardiac surgery, redo procedures, and high-acuity perioperative management. Working alongside pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, transplant teams, and specialist nursing staff, the consultant will help deliver safe surgical outcomes and strengthen the development of advanced pediatric cardiac services.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform complex congenital heart surgery in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
• Undertake repair of congenital cardiac defects requiring advanced surgical reconstruction.
• Manage redo cardiac operations and technically challenging pediatric cardiothoracic procedures.
• Perform high-risk neonatal cardiac surgery using appropriate surgical and perioperative strategies.
• Participate actively in pediatric heart transplantation programs from patient assessment through operative transplantation and postoperative care.
• Contribute to donor evaluation and recipient selection in coordination with the multidisciplinary transplant team.
• Perform pediatric heart transplantation procedures according to established transplant protocols and clinical standards.
• Provide comprehensive preoperative assessment and surgical planning for complex pediatric cardiac cases.
• Manage postoperative surgical care and coordinate closely with pediatric cardiac intensive care teams.
• Support critically ill patients requiring complex hemodynamic and respiratory management following cardiac surgery.
• Collaborate with pediatric cardiology, anesthesia, intensive care, perfusion, transplant medicine, imaging, and allied clinical teams.
• Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences to review imaging, clinical findings, operative options, and risk considerations.
• Contribute expertise in patients requiring ECMO or other advanced mechanical circulatory support when clinically indicated.
• Maintain strict standards for surgical safety, infection prevention, perioperative care, and clinical governance.
• Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and other surgical trainees.
• Maintain detailed operative reports, consultation notes, transplant records, and follow-up documentation.
• Participate in clinical audits, surgical outcome reviews, quality improvement programs, and service development.
• Contribute to research, publications, presentations, teaching, and continuing medical education in pediatric cardiac surgery.
• Support development of high-quality pediatric cardiac and transplantation pathways through evidence-based practice.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Board Certification or Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
• Formal subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
• Advanced training or substantial clinical experience in pediatric heart transplantation is mandatory.
• Minimum 7-10 years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.
• Extensive operative experience in neonatal and complex congenital heart surgery.
• Demonstrated participation in established pediatric cardiac transplant programs.
• Strong experience managing high-risk and critically ill pediatric cardiac patients.
• Valid Consultant License or eligibility for consultant-level licensing in the United Arab Emirates.
• Experience with ECMO and mechanical circulatory support is highly desirable.
• Previous exposure to a high-volume pediatric cardiac surgery or transplantation center is preferred.
• Strong clinical leadership and decision-making capability in high-acuity surgical environments.
• Able to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary cardiac, intensive care, transplant, and perioperative teams.
• Academic involvement in pediatric cardiac surgery research, teaching, or publications is advantageous.
