Responsibilities

  • Lead the clinical management of critically ill neonates, infants, and children in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.
  • Provide preoperative stabilization for congenital heart surgery or complex cardiac intervention.
  • Manage postoperative recovery after congenital cardiac procedures.
  • Assess and treat acute cardiovascular deterioration and pediatric emergencies.
  • Oversee invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation per patient needs.
  • Provide ECMO oversight and critical care management.
  • Interpret advanced hemodynamic data to guide treatment decisions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on anatomy and physiology.

Role Context

The Consultant - Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care will provide specialist management for critically ill pediatric patients requiring complex cardiovascular and intensive care support. The role covers preoperative stabilization, postoperative recovery following congenital heart surgery, cardiac emergencies, advanced respiratory support, ECMO, and intensive monitoring of children undergoing complex cardiac interventions. The consultant will work closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusion specialists, intensivists, and specialist nurses. Strong clinical judgment and coordinated multidisciplinary decision-making will be central to improving outcomes for high-risk pediatric cardiac patients while supporting families through complex treatment pathways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the clinical management of critically ill neonates, infants, and children admitted to the Pediatric Cardiac ICU.
  • Provide preoperative stabilization for children preparing for congenital heart surgery or complex cardiac intervention.
  • Manage postoperative recovery following congenital cardiac procedures.
  • Assess and treat acute cardiovascular deterioration and pediatric cardiac emergencies.
  • Manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation according to individual patient requirements.
  • Provide specialist oversight of ECMO support and associated critical care management.
  • Interpret advanced hemodynamic monitoring data and use findings to guide treatment decisions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans according to cardiac anatomy, physiology, surgical status, and clinical condition.
  • Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and coordinate priorities across medical, surgical, nursing, and allied clinical teams.
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons on complex patient management.
  • Coordinate with anesthesiologists, perfusionists, respiratory teams, and specialized nursing staff.
  • Review and interpret echocardiography findings and complex hemodynamic studies.
  • Monitor postoperative cardiac function, perfusion, rhythm, respiratory status, and organ recovery.
  • Provide rapid assessment and intervention when complications arise following surgery or interventional cardiology procedures.
  • Communicate clearly with parents and families regarding treatment plans, progress, risks, and expected clinical outcomes.
  • Maintain a compassionate and family-centered approach during prolonged or high-risk intensive care admissions.
  • Support development and review of clinical protocols for pediatric cardiac critical care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at strengthening safety, outcomes, and operational performance.
  • Contribute to departmental growth and development of pediatric cardiac intensive care services.
  • Mentor junior physicians and support specialist clinical education.
  • Participate in teaching activities, clinical research, audits, and continuing medical education.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical documentation throughout the patient 's intensive care journey.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold an MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution. Board Certification is required in Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology, or an equivalent recognized specialty. Formal fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care is mandatory. Suitable candidates should bring at least 8-10 years of post-specialization experience gained within a high-volume pediatric cardiac center. Strong clinical experience should include:
