Role Context

The Consultant Orthopedic Spine Surgeon will provide advanced diagnostic, conservative, and operative care for patients with complex spinal disease affecting function, mobility, neurological status, and quality of life. The role requires precise interpretation of imaging, careful neurological assessment, individualized treatment selection, and mastery of both conventional and minimally invasive spinal procedures. By managing difficult primary and revision cases within a multidisciplinary environment, the surgeon will contribute to safer interventions, stronger functional recovery, and improved long term spine outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate adult and pediatric patients presenting with complex spinal pain, instability, deformity, neurological compromise, or traumatic injury.
  • Diagnose congenital, degenerative, traumatic, infectious, neoplastic, and deformity-related conditions affecting the spine.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical examinations including detailed neurological and musculoskeletal assessment.
  • Review X-rays, CT scans, MRI studies, bone scans, and other appropriate spinal investigations.
  • Correlate radiological findings with symptoms, neurological deficits, biomechanics, and functional limitations.
  • Develop individualized management plans using conservative, interventional, and surgical approaches.
  • Determine when non-operative care is appropriate and coordinate physiotherapy, rehabilitation, medication, or pain management strategies.
  • Perform minimally invasive spine surgery for suitable degenerative and compressive conditions.
  • Undertake spinal decompression procedures to relieve neural compression.
  • Perform instrumented and non-instrumented spinal fusion according to pathology and biomechanical requirements.
  • Carry out disc replacement procedures in appropriately selected patients.
  • Manage spinal deformities requiring corrective surgery and stabilization.
  • Perform revision spine procedures for recurrent disease, failed previous surgery, hardware complications, non-union, or progressive deformity.
  • Treat spinal trauma and unstable injuries requiring urgent or planned surgical intervention.
  • Manage patients with spinal tumors or infectious pathology in coordination with oncology, infectious disease, and other relevant specialties.
  • Conduct thorough pre-operative assessment and evaluate surgical risk, neurological status, and expected functional outcome.
  • Provide detailed counselling regarding diagnosis, treatment alternatives, operative risks, potential complications, recovery, and long term expectations.
  • Develop surgical plans incorporating imaging, alignment, decompression requirements, fixation strategy, and rehabilitation goals.
  • Monitor patients closely following surgery for neurological function, wound healing, pain control, mobility, and complications.
  • Coordinate postoperative rehabilitation with physiotherapists and rehabilitation physicians.
  • Work closely with neurologists and neurosurgeons on patients with complex neurological or spinal cord involvement.
  • Collaborate with pain management specialists for patients requiring multimodal treatment.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary spine meetings and complex case discussions.
  • Provide emergency assessment and management for acute spinal trauma and neurological deterioration.
  • Maintain timely operative notes, consultation records, imaging reviews, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation.
  • Supervise residents, junior physicians, and allied healthcare professionals where appropriate.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement, and spine service development.
