About the Role

The Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for children and adolescents experiencing a broad range of mental health conditions. The role requires close engagement with parents, caregivers, psychologists, therapists, pediatricians, social workers, nurses, educators, and other healthcare professionals. Arabic language proficiency is essential for providing culturally appropriate care and communicating effectively with Arabic-speaking children and families.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments for children and adolescents.
• Diagnose and manage ADHD and associated behavioral presentations.
• Assess autism spectrum disorder and related behavioral difficulties.
• Treat anxiety, depressive, and mood disorders.
• Manage obsessive-compulsive disorder and trauma-related conditions.
• Assess behavioral and emotional disorders affecting children and adolescents.
• Diagnose and manage psychotic disorders where clinically indicated.
• Provide psychiatric management for eating and sleep disorders.
• Assess patients presenting with self-harm and other complex mental health concerns.
• Develop individualized treatment plans using evidence-based clinical practice.
• Prescribe and manage appropriate psychiatric medications.
• Monitor therapeutic response and potential medication-related adverse effects.
• Provide or coordinate psychological, behavioral, and psychosocial interventions.
• Engage parents and caregivers in assessment, psychoeducation, treatment planning, and ongoing care.
• Communicate diagnoses, treatment options, prognosis, and recommendations sensitively to patients and families.

Risk and Crisis Management

• Conduct structured clinical risk assessments.
• Identify and manage safeguarding concerns.
• Assess suicidal ideation, self-harm, aggression, and other high-risk presentations.
• Provide appropriate psychiatric crisis intervention.
• Coordinate escalation of care or hospitalization when clinically indicated.
• Maintain patient safety throughout assessment and treatment.

Multidisciplinary Care and Clinical Governance

• Collaborate with psychologists, therapists, pediatricians, social workers, nurses, educators, and other healthcare professionals.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and clinical meetings.
• Maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation.
• Support clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement activities.
• Contribute to mental health service-development initiatives.
• Participate in teaching, supervision, and professional development activities where required.

Qualifications

• MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Recognized postgraduate qualification in Psychiatry.
• Fellowship, Board Certification, or equivalent specialist qualification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or Child Psychiatry.
• Eligibility for Consultant-level licensure with the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi.
• Current professional registration or licensure in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Appropriate continuing professional development and certification as required.

Experience

• Demonstrated Consultant or Specialist experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
• Strong experience assessing and managing children and adolescents with complex psychiatric and behavioral conditions.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary mental health or pediatric services.
• Experience managing psychiatric emergencies and clinical risk is highly desirable.
• Experience working with culturally diverse populations is an advantage.
• Previous UAE or GCC healthcare experience is desirable but not mandatory.

Language Requirements

• Arabic language proficiency is essential.
• Good command of English for clinical documentation and multidisciplinary communication.
• Ability to communicate effectively with Arabic-speaking children, adolescents, parents, and caregivers.
