Role Context

The Consultant Cardiac Electrophysiologist will lead the assessment and treatment of patients with complex electrical disorders of the heart. The position combines advanced diagnostic interpretation, invasive electrophysiology, catheter-based intervention, device therapy, and longitudinal rhythm management. Through precise procedural planning and close multidisciplinary coordination, the consultant will help reduce arrhythmia burden, prevent sudden cardiac complications, improve cardiac function, and strengthen outcomes for patients with challenging rhythm disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess patients with suspected or established cardiac arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities.
  • Diagnose complex rhythm disorders using clinical evaluation, ECG findings, ambulatory monitoring, imaging, and electrophysiological testing.
  • Interpret 12-lead electrocardiograms and identify atrial, ventricular, and conduction-related abnormalities.
  • Review Holter monitoring, event recorder data, telemetry, and other ambulatory rhythm studies.
  • Perform invasive electrophysiological studies to define arrhythmia mechanisms and treatment strategies.
  • Conduct catheter ablation procedures for supraventricular tachycardia and other appropriate rhythm disorders.
  • Perform advanced ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.
  • Undertake ventricular tachycardia ablation in suitable complex cases.
  • Use 3D electroanatomical mapping systems for precise localization and treatment of arrhythmogenic substrates.
  • Apply radiofrequency ablation techniques according to procedural indication and patient condition.
  • Perform cryoablation where clinically appropriate and within approved privileges.
  • Utilize pulsed-field ablation techniques where available, indicated, and supported by institutional protocols.
  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans combining procedural and medical rhythm management.
  • Manage patients with recurrent or treatment-resistant atrial fibrillation.
  • Evaluate and treat supraventricular tachycardia, atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter, and other atrial arrhythmias.
  • Diagnose and manage ventricular arrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia.
  • Assess patients with bradyarrhythmias and conduction system disease.
  • Determine indications for permanent pacemaker implantation.
  • Implant and manage implantable cardioverter defibrillators where within scope of practice.
  • Provide cardiac resynchronization therapy for appropriate heart failure and conduction disorder patients.
  • Perform device interrogation, programming, optimization, and follow-up.
  • Evaluate device alerts, lead function, battery status, arrhythmia episodes, and therapy delivery.
  • Participate in complex device management and lead extraction planning where clinically indicated.
  • Provide detailed pre-procedure evaluation and risk assessment.
  • Counsel patients regarding ablation, device implantation, procedural alternatives, expected outcomes, and potential complications.
  • Manage post-procedure monitoring following electrophysiology studies, ablation, and device procedures.
  • Identify and treat procedural complications promptly in collaboration with appropriate specialties.
  • Coordinate care with interventional cardiologists for patients with concurrent coronary disease.
  • Work closely with heart failure specialists when rhythm disorders affect ventricular function or advanced heart failure management.
  • Collaborate with cardiac surgeons on complex arrhythmia, surgical, and device-related cases.
  • Provide electrophysiology input for critically ill patients in collaboration with intensivists.
  • Participate in dedicated cardiac rhythm and device clinics.
  • Review complex cases during multidisciplinary cardiology meetings.
  • Maintain complete procedural reports, rhythm interpretations, device records, treatment plans, and follow-up documentation.
  • Follow evidence-based international guidelines for arrhythmia and device management.
  • Contribute to electrophysiology service development, clinical pathways, and procedural standards.
  • Participate in clinical teaching and supervision of physicians, fellows, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support research, clinical audits, quality improvement, and patient-safety initiatives.
