2. Mission / Core purpose of the Job

The Chief Communication Platforms Business Officer (CCPBO) will take full P&L ownership, drive the entire value chain of a multi-million USD strategic Wholesale Mobile Connectivity business unit, and deliver revenue, profit, customer experience, and new product targets across all service lines. S / he will lead from the front a highly skilled group of sales, presales, commercial, product, and business operations experts who are responsible for the commercialization of Bayobab’s Y’ello Connect platform infrastructure.

The CCPBO will ‘own’ (., be held fully accountable for) all aspects of strategy, management, people and performance of wholesale international voice, messaging, signaling, IPX, roaming, and digital identity business lines.

CCPBO drives international business revenue & margin targets, continuously identifying business opportunities for growth, through mean areas of :

  • Sales Management : provide leadership and be the driving force for growth hacks.
  • Commercial Management : Energise new service launches, expand Bayobab Connect Hub footprint coverage, and deliver high NPS.
  • Operations Management : maximise revenue generation through higher reliability of MTN’s state-of-the-art platforms & network, cutting across Cost, Rate, Route, Monitor and Invoice functions.
  • People Management : Collaborate & support the wider team by providing deep insights on the carrier industry landscape, training for skills and delivering work-life balance.

3. Context : (Global influences, environmental / industry demands, organisational mission

Bayobab has successfully built a growing wholesale carrier business across fixed and mobility business lines, where consolidation across International Voice, Messaging, Signaling, Roaming and Value-Added Services has become critical for commercial and operational excellence. This function must therefore ensure successful delivery in the context of :

MTN’s position as the best international mobile and roaming connectivity provider in Africa and the Middle East

MTN’s decision to centralise the commercial and technical management of all international cross-border traffic, including Roaming, interconnect Voice, SMS, Signaling and VAS.

  • Responsibility to keep track of global trends and advancements and stay abreast of standardization work of relevant industry bodies.
  • Demystify complex requirements from multiple internal and external stakeholders and translate them to deliverable projects to support business growth.
  • Drive Sales, Commercial, and Product Strategy.
  • Drive Operational excellence, achievement of top quartile operating efficiency and effectiveness through scale and common processes.
  • Evaluate & review market pricing, wholesale & roaming alliances / partnerships, ensuring best-in-class quality and commercial rates.
  • Collaborate with a highly interconnected international telecommunications community.
  • Drive initiatives in line with the Group and OpCo company’s business requirements.
  • Solid understanding and exposure to wholesale billing platforms, clearing, settlements, and negotiations.
  • Be cognizant of the geographic complexity and competitiveness of MTN’s Africa & ME footprint.
  • Be cognizant of the multiple regulatory regimes across diverse jurisdictions and cultures
  • Be at the forefront of MTN Group's diversification strategy.

4. Key Performance Areas : Core, essential responsibilities / outputs of the position (KPA's)

The CCPBO will be accountable for achieving the following objectives :

  • Own, define, agree, drive, and evolve, with key stakeholders, a wholesale mobility and international roaming business plan that identifies portfolio scope; customer interfaces; development requirements; competitive position; service experience; returns; and approximate incremental capex / opex budget needs, in support of Ambition 2025.
  • Drive and oversee the implementation of the latest state-of-the-art technical infrastructure and platforms (API) supporting the execution of sales plans for International Voice, Messaging, Signaling, IPX / GRX, International Roaming, and other VAS services to gain a leading position in the market.
  • Lead a team of experts to deliver the product roadmap across the Wholesale Mobile Connectivity portfolio, providing clear direction and leadership; implementing global standards for product governance, service management, and customer experience.
  • Interact with business planning and strategy leadership within MTN Group to ensure that maximum benefits can be driven through the supply and demand value chain.
  • Drive MTN roaming strategy by defining the evolution of MTN roaming position, advancements in terms of partner relationships, and potential innovative roaming solutions for MTN.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain clear transparency on competitive intensity, commercial model, financial performance, cost structure, profitability, and future growth potential of the business.
  • Drive innovation by continuously analyzing the business, identifying opportunities, verifying solution constructs, and deploying enhancements.
  • Drive alignment, prioritization, and optimization of roaming requirements across different OpCos and convert them into tangible products and services that can be understood by the relevant customer segments.
  • Oversee strategic negotiation, review lists of strategic roaming partners, track developments in their business environment, and steer implementation of tactical partnerships to ensure that MTN has a fair share of international inbound roaming traffic.
  • Keep a keen eye on both short-term and long-term needs to enable the company to achieve its strategic wholesale mobility mission, with a specific focus on International Voice, International Roaming, International Messaging, and VAS.
  • Keep in contact with key customers and support them to make sure that the agreed service is delivered.
  • Educate stakeholders and internal customers on the role of Bayobab from account management, market opportunities, commercial targets, product plans, and trend analysis perspective.
  • Together with the GMs, oversee the alignment of Bayobab with MTN Opcos, articulating opportunities, highlighting threats, and aligning operating models, operating systems, procedures, and processes.
  • Together with the GMs, implement a robust group roaming organization by mapping local OpCo staff to GlobalConnect.
  • KPI’s / targets as set by the Bayobab Board and the Bayobab CEO
  • Provide a consolidated Wholesale Mobility Business Strategy
  • Support strategic negotiation and agreements with key customers and suppliers

Education :

  • Minimum 4-year Academic Degree (Engineering / Business Management)
  • Postgraduate qualification, MBA / Master's (Economics, Business Management) preferred

Experience :

  • Over 10 years of relevant experience in the international telecommunications wholesale and infrastructure sector.
  • 5+ years of extensive experience at senior leadership level within the wholesale Telecommunication and Mobility business, with direct responsibility for key products including A2P / P2P Messaging, International Voice, IPX, Roaming Hubs, Signalling and Transit services.
  • Proven track record in driving growth, managing P&L, and developing go-to-market strategies for wholesale product lines across diverse international markets.
  • Demonstrated capabilities as a strategic thinker, innovative value creator, culture and change champion, and results-driven leader.

  • Deep insight into, and significant experience of, the carrier market and specific needs of that customer segment, including understanding of network topologies and technologies; carrier and roaming product design, functionality, commercials, and operations; and carriers’ business issues and challenges
