Assistant Manager - Roll Shop

We are hiring an Assistant Manager - Roll Shop for one of our clients, a leading metal and steel manufacturing company based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Roll Shop Manager in managing the daily Roll Shop operations and maintenance activities
- Plan and supervise roll grinding, roll assembly, disassembly, and roll changing activities
- Ensure the availability of rolls and tooling in line with rolling mill production schedules
- Monitor roll performance, wear, and consumption to improve roll life and reduce operational costs
- Coordinate with the Production, Mechanical, Quality Control (QC), and Production Planning and Control (PPC) departments to ensure smooth rolling operations
- Conduct inspections and dimensional verification of rolls before installation and after dismantling
- Monitor the condition and maintenance of Roll Shop machinery, grinding machines, material handling equipment, and tools
- Ensure preventive and predictive maintenance activities are implemented effectively
- Maintain roll history cards, grinding records, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records
- Monitor and control Roll Shop consumables, spare parts, and tooling inventory
- Ensure safe material handling, proper housekeeping, and appropriate storage practices within the Roll Shop
- Identify roll defects, operational abnormalities, and quality issues, and initiate corrective actions
- Support shutdown planning and maintenance activities related to rolling mill rolls and equipment
- Conduct toolbox talks, on‑the‑job training, and skill‑development programs for Roll Shop personnel
- Ensure the implementation of Permit‑to‑Work (PTW), Lockout/Tag out (LOTO), and safety procedures during maintenance activities
- Ensure compliance with applicable statutory, customer, operational, and company requirements
- Implement and maintain Integrated Management System (IMS) procedures in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards
- Participate in risk assessments, hazard identification, environmental aspect and impact assessments, and the implementation of operational controls
- Support internal and external audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Promote quality awareness, environmental sustainability, energy conservation, and a strong occupational health and safety culture within the department
Authority
- Authorize and supervise roll preparation, grinding, assembly, and maintenance activities
- Stop unsafe work practices or operations that may affect product quality, safety, or environmental compliance
- Allocate manpower and operational resources for Roll Shop activities
- Recommend the repair, rejection, or replacement of defective rolls and tooling
- Initiate maintenance requests and spare parts requirements for Roll Shop equipment
- Conduct inspections and verify compliance with operational, quality, and safety procedures
- Coordinate training and competency development activities for Roll Shop personnel
- Participate in audits, investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives related to Roll Shop operations
Accountabilities
- Ensure the availability and reliability of rolls for uninterrupted rolling mill operations
- Reduce roll failures, equipment downtime, rolling defects, and operational delays
- Ensure proper maintenance and documentation of roll inspection, grinding, and inventory records
- Maintain compliance with product quality specifications and operational standards
- Ensure the effective implementation of IMS procedures and operational controls within Roll Shop activities
- Maintain compliance with applicable health, safety, environmental regulations, and company procedures
- Ensure safe working practices, proper PPE usage, and compliance with PTW and LOTO systems
- Support the achievement of departmental productivity, quality, maintenance, and cost control objectives
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, environmental performance, operational efficiency, and occupational health and safety performance
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 8–12 years of experience in rolling mill operations, Roll Shop maintenance, or a similar manufacturing environment
- Experience supervising maintenance teams and coordinating with cross-functional departments
- Strong leadership, problem‑solving, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Good communication skills and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
