Job summary

Yas Plaza Hotels by IHG in Abu Dhabi seeks an Area Director of Engineering to lead all repair, maintenance and engineering operations across Yas Plaza Hotels. You will oversee HVAC, electrical and mechanical systems, manage the Engineering Department, and ensure safety, compliance and efficient maintenance programs.

About the Job

As the Area Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of repair, maintenance, and engineering operations across Yas Plaza Hotels. This includes the upkeep of the physical plant, engineering facilities, and all mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. You will also oversee the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department, ensuring the efficient functioning of all hotel facilities, compliance with safety and operational standards, and the effective execution of maintenance programmes and projects. Additionally, you will undertake any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and manage engineering and maintenance operations across all hotels under Yas Plaza Hotels.
• Monitor departmental budgets and control expenses across all areas of the department. Participate in the preparation of annual departmental operating budgets and capital expenditure plans that support the overall objectives of the hotels.
• Collaborate with the Corporate Procurement Director, Engineering teams, external architects, and contractors on renovations and other capital projects. Obtain and evaluate contractor bids, coordinate with construction supervisors, and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with established quality standards.
• Drive technical solutions and provide leadership and direction to project management teams and managers. Oversee the development and execution of project scope, cost, and schedules, from concept through initial implementation, for multidisciplinary capital projects across Yas Plaza Hotels.
• Provide the managerial and technical leadership required to maximize project management effectiveness and support the company's strategic objectives.
• Undertake any additional projects or responsibilities assigned by management, ensuring their successful implementation in support of the business objectives.
• Develop team capabilities and improve performance through coaching, constructive feedback, and the establishment of performance and development goals. Recognize and encourage outstanding performance.
• Oversee the physical operations of all hotels, including the maintenance and repair of interior and exterior buildings, guest rooms and their contents, laundry and kitchen equipment, refrigeration systems, lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), water treatment systems, and swimming pools, where applicable.
• Ensure the effective implementation and completion of preventive maintenance programmes for guest rooms, public areas, building facilities, and life safety systems. Work closely with the Rooms Division, Food and Beverage, Security, Purchasing, and other operational departments across Yas Plaza Hotels.
• Establish and maintain procedures to safeguard inventories and hotel assets, including tools, supplies, equipment, furniture, and televisions; ensure timely replenishment of supplies and inventory; and minimize waste.
• Ensure that spare parts, equipment, and maintenance supplies are ordered and replenished in a timely and cost-effective manner while minimizing waste and supporting sustainability initiatives across Yas Plaza Hotels.
• Supervise and coordinate contractors and service providers. Prepare specifications for electrical, mechanical, and associated building works, ensuring compliance with applicable local government regulations and relevant technical standards. Inspect completed works and approve them upon satisfactory completion.
• Oversee the maintenance and proper functioning of all life safety systems throughout the hotels and promptly report any major defects or deficiencies.
• Ensure that all engineering and maintenance documentation is accurate and up to date, including technical drawings, specifications, equipment records, and operation and maintenance manuals.
• Identify, evaluate, and implement energy conservation initiatives. Monitor energy consumption, investigate wastage, and recommend measures to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
• Promote sustainable engineering practices and ensure that maintenance and operational activities align with the environmental and sustainability objectives of Yas Plaza Hotels.
• Advise the General Manager on building conditions, engineering systems, maintenance requirements, potential risks, and appropriate precautionary measures.
• Ensure compliance with hotel environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures. Promote safe working practices to protect the health and safety of guests and colleagues while safeguarding and conserving the environment.

About You

• Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in an engineering leadership role, preferably within the hospitality industry.
• Proven track record of managing large-scale hotel engineering and maintenance operations.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and execute complex engineering projects within established timelines and budgets.
• Proficiency in relevant engineering software, technical applications, and engineering design programmes.
• Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Proven ability to develop and manage departmental budgets, control costs, and optimize operational expenses.
