Job description

An Air Traffic Control Assistant (ATCA) role is varied, as the job title cover several different positions, including those in the Control Tower and Aeronautical Information Services (AIS).

The ATCA is responsible for maintaining 24-hour operational timing and providing support to the Duty Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO), ensuring that all aircraft receive safe, efficient, and effective service.

Additionally, the ATCA must ensure that all data and information related to AIS and Flight Planning are accurate and compliant with international civil aviation standards, in order to support the safety, regularity, and efficiency of air traffic operations.

Key Accountabilities

Carry out procedures connected with the Briefing Room, including:

  • Managing, correcting, and disseminating flight plans and other flight-associated messages using the Comsoft Solutions Aeronautical Data Access System (CADAS).
  • Obtaining information to meet the needs of the pre-flight and in-flight information services.
  • Sending Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) on behalf of the Airport Authority and disseminating them via Email or the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN).
  • Coding and decoding incoming and outgoing NOTAMs.
  • Monitoring the validity of incoming and outgoing NOTAMs and maintaining a checklist.
  • Verifying and validating NOTAMs received from the originator.
  • Updating aeronautical information related to all OMSJ NOTAMs to all airport agencies via Email.
  • Liaising with the Tower to ensure all Air Traffic Control staff are aware of aircraft movements.
  • Updating Aeronautical Publications.
  • Answering telephones and intercoms, and processing essential information promptly and accurately.

Carry out procedures connected with the Air Traffic Control Tower, including:

  • Assisting the Duty ATCO when requested, especially during emergencies and low visibility operations.
  • Preparing flight progress strips and updating/managing flight plans (FPL).
  • Liaising with Airport Operations regarding aircraft parking.
  • Providing flight data to the ATCO.
  • Recording flight movement data into flight information and display systems.
  • Liaising with other operational departments and coordinating with other Air Traffic Units regarding start-up clearances.
  • Providing information to internal and external emergency services.
  • Completing standard templates as per the ATCA Operations Manual, performing administrative duties, and handling internal and external inquiries.
  • Keeping necessary legislative and internal documentation up to date or archived.
  • Coordinating with the Briefing Room.

Carry out general procedures related to the ATCA role, including:

  • Complying with staff instructions and administrative rules regarding conduct in the operational area.
  • Answering telephones and intercoms and processing essential information promptly and accurately.
  • Communicating with external agencies on various aviation-related matters.
  • Reporting equipment unserviceability to the relevant parties and initiating the corrective call-out procedure.
  • Updating the Watch Log and other operational and technical logs/reports as necessary.
  • Assisting the Assistant In-Charge with document control and other safety management-related tasks.
  • Maintaining a good working knowledge of ATS and AIS-related regulations and documentation.
  • Undertaking other non-routine tasks as designated by management to ensure the smooth running of ATC and AIS services.
