Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To outline the responsibilities and authorities the Chemist in XRF section has in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical and key support personnel.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Must be able to record, evaluate and validate all XRF data.
  2. Must be conversant with report writing.
  3. Responsible for all daily document requirements and the distribution to the different departments.
  4. Responsible for the monthly time sheet accounting.
  5. Routinely provide training to operators.
  6. Completes tasks within the allocated time and plans work for operators to ensure that overall service goals of the laboratory are met.
  7. Responsibility to perform routine and non-routine Analytical operation on XRF spectrometer if and as required.
  8. Responsible for the supervision of all XRF analysis and reporting of results.
  9. Responsibility to ensure turnaround time is adhered to at all times, for work specified in regard to XRF analysis.
  10. Responsibility to draw up weekly status & production report with regard to internal analysis.
  11. Responsibility, under the guidance of Section Manager, to validate any new methods or modifications made for XRF analysis.
  12. Competent in the use of the LIMS.
  13. Must be able to do troubleshooting on instrument and methods used.
  14. Must know how to verify calibration standards / quality control standards / verification standards and Certified Reference Materials (CRM’s).
  15. Managing Good Laboratory Practice.
  16. Must be able to help with the preparation of SANAS audits.
  17. Managing laboratory documentation.
  18. Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the Section Manager.
  19. Responsibility to ensure housekeeping in the XRF area is kept up to standard.
  20. Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments performed.
  21. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  22. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

  1. Any person has the right to refuse to perform work that may damage the environment in an imminent and serious way and to report such a situation. The employee has the responsibility to protect the environment as well.
  2. Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection.
  3. Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  4. Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
  5. Address client complaints.

Qualifications

Education

  1. BSc Chemistry or National Diploma Analytical Chemistry.
  2. Matric, with Maths and Science Qualification.

Experience

  1. At least 2 years in XRF field.
  2. At least 2 years supervisory experience.
