Job Description

Responsible for performing a variety of skilled technical duties and semi-skilled labor in the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of water systems & wastewater collection systems, including water production and distribution, metering, pressure regulators, and customer service response.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provides lead direction, training, and work review to staff; organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, follows up to ensure completion of assigned work.
  2. Reads blueprints with the ability to analyze project plans to determine construction requirements and assign duties.
  3. Operates water systems and performs maintenance tasks; cleans, maintains, and repairs main line sewers, manholes, and laterals; locates, repairs, and maintains water and sewer line breaks or leaks; repairs and installs various water and wastewater appurtenances.
  4. Performs utility line location marking, activates and terminates water meters, and assists with customer service requests.
  5. Performs meter testing and fire hydrant flushing.
  6. Conducts operational and safety checks of equipment before use.
  7. Excavates and backfills trenches using hand and power tools; repairs, installs, and maintains water lines, meters, and related facilities; cuts pipes, installs tapping valves, lays pipe, and installs valves and fire hydrants.
  8. Observes safe work methods, uses safety equipment, secures work sites from traffic hazards, and attends safety meetings.
  9. Checks job sites for potential hazards, including confined spaces.
  10. Responds as Shift Operator, depending on certifications and duties assigned.
  11. Maintains and services test equipment, hand and power tools.
  12. Installs, adjusts, and troubleshoots pressure regulating valves, meters, and chemical pumps (if applicable).
  13. Responds to public questions and complaints; performs assignments in areas with heavy public use.
  14. Responds to emergency call outs and performs standby duties as required.
  15. Prepares and maintains records of work performed and materials used.
  16. Contributes to the company's service efficiency by offering suggestions and participating as an active team member.
Requirements:
  1. Relevant technical tertiary qualification.
  2. 2-5 years' experience in water/wastewater collection systems operation, maintenance, and repair.
  3. Relevant certification and licenses as required by South African water industry authorities.
  4. Knowledge of methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in maintenance and repair of water and wastewater systems.
  5. Understanding of safe work methods and safety regulations.
  6. Proficiency with computer software including SCADA and GIS mapping.
  7. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  8. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
