Job description

Job Description :

Our client, a leading mining company with multiple operations globally, is seeking a VP of Engineering Energy and Decarbonisation. Core duties include developing and implementing the Group's climate change policy, governance, strategy, objectives, and targets; ensuring alignment of strategic and operational plans with the Group Energy and Decarbonisation Strategy across all regions; and enhancing sustainability by reducing energy and carbon costs.

Responsibilities :

  • Set the Group's energy GHG emissions and decarbonisation policy, governance, strategy, objectives, and targets in line with the Group Strategy.
  • Drive the delivery of carbon neutrality by 2040 and net carbon zero by 2050.
  • Assess corporate strategy opportunities related to energy and decarbonisation.
  • Support the integration of Mergers and Acquisitions concerning energy and decarbonisation.
  • Lead coordination of the Group demand-side energy management strategy and ensure regional compliance with targets.
  • Support development of the South African electricity supply industry to enable decarbonisation.
  • Implement operational adaptation and resilience measures related to climate change, energy, and GHG emissions.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership in climate change management, risks, and governance concerning energy and GHG emissions.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments, innovations, and technologies in energy by liaising with industry peers and research organizations and representing the company at industry forums.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal frameworks (ICMM, WGC, UNGC, etc.) related to GHG emissions management.
  • Assess, plan, source alternative energy supplies, and negotiate terms with energy providers to support decarbonisation goals.
  • Represent the company at external industry forums and bodies such as ICMM, Minerals Council, etc.
  • Pursue and utilize innovative technologies in climate change, energy, and decarbonisation, including storage and hydrogen.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally across all levels, including C-suite, EXCOs, Boards, government officials, and industry peers.

Requirements : Qualification and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Engineering.
  • Postgraduate Diploma, Honours Degree, or Professional Qualification in Engineering; an MBA is advantageous.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a related role, with at least 5 years in a management or specialist capacity.
  • Cross-functional, strategic, and conceptual thinking skills.
  • Skills across legal, accounting, environmental, engineering, and corporate finance; strong negotiation skills.
  • Professional communication skills suitable for Board or Ministerial level interactions and project management expertise.
