Job summary

Qualifications

Job description

The National Research Foundation (NRF) supports research and human capital development through funding, provision of National Research Facilities, and science outreach programs across all fields of science and technology, including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) leads South Africa's involvement in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA), focusing on engineering, science, and construction.

SARAO, managed by the NRF, includes radio astronomy instruments and programs such as the MeerKAT and KAT-7 telescopes in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, and the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) program across nine African countries. It also engages in human capital development and commercialization efforts.

The primary purpose of this role is to perform timely and quality planned, preventative, and emergency maintenance on all equipment and buildings at SARAO Sites in Cape Town.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform tasks according to job cards or work orders, meeting client and company requirements.
  2. Investigate, evaluate, and restore equipment malfunctions.
  3. Carry out minor repairs and servicing of electrical equipment and appliances as per SLA.
  4. Handle office moves, including repairs and maintenance.
  5. Perform minor repairs and servicing on plumbing-related equipment as per SLA.
  6. Conduct tier 1 inspections and repairs on air-conditioning equipment.
  7. Inspect and report on fire and access control equipment.
  8. Maintain health and safety standards for the building and equipment.
  9. Ensure access control and CCTV systems are inspected and maintained regularly.
  10. Provide feedback to the Site Service Supervisor on operational restorations.
  11. Maintain and clean vehicles.
  12. Participate in planned and unplanned projects.
Key Requirements:
  • Grade 12 qualification.
  • Trade Test certification is advantageous.
  • Experience in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or HVAC work is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in building maintenance, air-conditioning, electrical work, water reticulation, and grounds maintenance.
Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years in relevant maintenance fields.
  • Basic training on hand tools and mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license with at least 2 years of driving experience.
Knowledge:
  • Building maintenance skills (painting, tiling, carpentry, plastering, bricklaying, civil work).
  • Ability to read schematic drawings.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act and ISO standards.
