The National Research Foundation (NRF) through SARAO seeks a Junior Electrician to support electrical design, installation, and maintenance for Meerkat and related infrastructure in Cape Town. You will assist in CAD designs, coordinate with senior engineers, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
The role requires a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering and a trade-tested electrician qualification, plus a valid driver’s license, and experience in building electrical infrastructure.

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.
The electrician will provide support to the Electrical Functional Group, program / project managers operations and facilities management with respect to electrical related tasks including carrying out the design of electrical systems, including high current applications and ensuring smooth operation of the Meerkat and Hartebeeshoek telescopes, successful delivery and acceptance of Meerkat Extension, AVN and infrastructure projects within schedule, budget and quality standards and with electrical related tasks.
