Description General Definition of Work
Under supervision (Utilities Maintenance Worker I), general supervision (Utilities Maintenance Worker II), or direction (Utilities Maintenance Worker III), performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the maintenance, operation, and repair of the City's water distribution system; installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of the City's wastewater collection system; reads residential and commercial water meters, provides customer service; maintains all vehicles and equipment used; and performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics Utilities Maintenance Worker I – This is the entry-level class in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series.
It is distinguished from the Utilities Maintenance Worker II by performing more routine maintenance and operations tasks.
Advancement depends on proficiency, obtaining Class I Distribution & Collections Certificates, and is at the discretion of supervisors or management.

Essential Functions Maintain water distribution system including main and service lines, valves, fire hydrants, reservoirs, and related equipment; locate and repair service line leaks. Perform maintenance and inspection duties on the wastewater collection system and lift stations, including collection lines, junctures, pumps, and motors; locate leaks and complete repairs. Clean wastewater collection system; operate hydro-vacuum truck; clear clogs; clean manholes, wet wells, and lift stations. Install, repair, and replace pumps and motors at pump stations and well sites. Overhaul and maintain hydraulically controlled valves and controls. Assist in installation of distribution lines; cut, prepare, thread, and link pipe; replace valves; install water services and meters. Operate leak detection and pipe location equipment; assess leaks. Maintain and secure manholes and pump stations; monitor lift station operations; record data and prepare reports. Read water meters; test meters for accuracy. Respond to customer service issues; check pressures; install meters; inspect for overflows and stoppages; notify customers of work and interruptions. Maintain reservoirs and related equipment. Operate heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, and trenchers; participate in training; deliver materials. Assist in pavement and concrete work; repair structures. Maintain backflows and fire checks. Service air-vacs and blow-offs; maintain records; enter data in GIS system. Perform traffic control; record operating hours and usages. Remove weeds and debris; spray pesticides / herbicides. Assist in water treatment and bypass operations. Monitor inventory; restock supplies. Maintain vehicles and tools. Follow safety practices and procedures. Assist in storm drain cleaning. Perform emergency locates. Perform on-call duties and overtime as required. Perform related duties as required. Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of meter reading, construction tools, safety practices, water and wastewater systems, GIS, and computer systems.
Ability to troubleshoot, perform manual labor, read maps, operate equipment, and communicate effectively.
Ability to work independently, respond to emergencies, and maintain safety standards.
For higher levels, knowledge of supervision, advanced safety, and office software is required.
Education and Experience High school diploma or GED.
Some maintenance experience is desired for Level I.
Physical Requirements Must exert up to 50 pounds regularly and over pounds occasionally.
Requires standing, walking, speaking, hearing, reaching, handling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions.
Visual and auditory requirements as specified.
Exposure to outdoor conditions, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
Must wear protective gear and follow safety protocols.
Additional Requirements Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six months, CPR and First Aid certifications, and a valid driver's license.
Additional industry-specific certifications may be required.
