Utilities Technician

Purpose of the role
The Utilities Technician is responsible for maintaining equipment in basic condition and extending its lifetime through adequate and cost-effective (preventive/condition-based) maintenance in the Utilities area. He/she is responsible for identifying and eliminating losses/waste, reducing Equipment Breakdowns, reducing unplanned and eventually planned downtime, reducing maintenance costs, and improving OEE across Operations by leveraging KWS methodologies, while maintaining the highest standards in Safety and Quality & Food Safety. He/she ensures that the Maintenance Plan for Utilities is continuously updated and executed.
Limited travel could be required. He/she performs standby duties across the factory, which may mean coming in during odd hours.
Working Relationships
- Reports to the Mechanical Business Partner
- 1 Direct Report: Utilities Fitter
- Works closely with the PM Coordinator, Maintenance Technicians for Process/Packing, Stores Controller, shift fitters, and Process Engineer.
- Partners with all other Plant/CSL Departments at all levels
- Participates in one or more KWS Centers of Excellence
- Works with equipment suppliers
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Environmental, Health and Safety
- Promotes a Health and Safety culture within the Plant, leveraging GEMBA, Safety 7 Tours, and Leader-led observation programs.
- Ensures compliance with Environmental, Health & Safety rules, policies & legislated requirements, acting proactively to address concerns.
- Assists in root cause analysis of incidents/audit findings in Utilities and implements actions to mitigate risks and eliminate hazards.
Quality and Food Safety
- Promotes a Food Safety & Quality culture within the Plant, using GEMBA & Golden 6 Tours for coaching.
- Ensures adherence to Food Safety & Quality policies & procedures, including legislated requirements, and addresses concerns proactively.
- Contributes to root cause analysis of incidents and audit findings related to Utilities, implementing actions to mitigate risks and eliminate hazards.
People
- Encourages proactive, clear, and transparent communication across Maintenance, Operations, and other departments through meetings and shift handovers.
- Builds capability within the Mechanical Maintenance team and Operations, focusing on loss elimination and Management of Change.
KWS Systems
- Participates in KWS Centers of Excellence and manages critical Daily Management Systems.
- Follows up on critical Maintenance DMSs and promotes Reliability Maintenance in Utilities.
- Enforces SAP as the single source of truth for spares, work orders, and requisitions.
Manufacturing & Operational Efficiency
- Owns the OEE improvement journey for Utilities, collaborating with Operations to analyze trends and develop action plans.
- Uses KWS tools to diagnose malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement improvements.
- Works to reduce unplanned downtime through planned maintenance, and further reduces planned downtime to improve OEE and reduce costs.
- Ensures the long-range capital plan includes necessary repairs and replacements, minimizing obsolescence.
- Maintains up-to-date equipment asset lists and drawings through regular audits.
Preferred Education, Skill & Experience
- National Diploma or BTech or Trade Test with 5 years experience, plus at least 3 years in FMCG.
- Minimum 3+ years in a senior artisan leadership role for a team of artisans.
Skills & Knowledge
- Results-driven with manual dexterity, attention to detail, customer focus, safety awareness, and planning skills.
- Adaptability, initiative, continuous learning, stress tolerance, and effective communication.
- Ability to interpret technical diagrams and lead/mentor teams.
- Manage work schedules and perform other mechanical maintenance duties as required.
- Good housekeeping and 5S practices.
Knowledge of
- Kellogg’s quality, food safety, and health & safety procedures.
- Operational procedures and statutory regulations.
- Strong mechanical background and familiarity with SAP or CMMS.
