Job description

Our client, a leading Banking and Finance Giant, has a fantastic opportunity for an Underwriting Manager who will plan and control the Underwriting Department to profitably grow the risk book on an underwriting and administration basis; in line with the company's business strategy.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the implementation and development of underwriting management strategies.
  2. Manage and monitor short-term underwriting requirements and decisions to ensure cost-effectiveness of pricing.
  3. Provide input into budget determination around headcount and cost of landing business.
  4. Ensure transformational targets are met.
  5. Contribute to a culture of transformation by participating in the company's culture-building initiatives, business strategy, and CSI.
  6. Stay abreast of developments in the field of expertise, ensuring personal and professional growth.
  7. Lead organizational change initiatives by providing direction and aligning to strategy and culture.
  8. Ensure issues raised in culture surveys are addressed and results are improved.
  9. Deliver a world-class service through others by ensuring a client-centric culture through required interventions.
  10. Identify areas of resource inefficiencies and promote optimization through multi-skilling and addressing capacity gaps.
  11. Manage adherence to agreed SLAs.
  12. Update any service agreement/contracts as required, including annual review.
  13. Make formal presentations to all business stakeholders to promote and enhance stronger business relationships.
  14. Collaborate with internal and external clients through attending business meetings and presentations and underwriting seminars.
  15. Manage and monitor short-term underwriting decisions.
  16. Accept and authorize high-level risks within company guidelines.
  17. Develop, implement, and update underwriting rules based on current approaches to specific impairments.
  18. Conduct bi-annual underwriting audits to ensure alignment with risk appetite.
  19. Ensure automated workflow within the administration system delivers the desired outcomes.
  20. Optimize efficiency and support the company's vision, values, and strategy through team management.
  21. Manage team performance, set performance agreements, and develop talent retention programs.
  22. Build skills and knowledge within the team.
  23. Ensure continuous improvement goals are achieved.
Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Insurance or Risk Management or similar qualification (NQF 7). Higher Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Short Term Insurance and/or Underwriting qualification (RE5 and/or RE1). Essential Certifications: FAIS Regulatory Examination 1. Preferred Certifications: Membership of the Insurance Institute of South Africa (AIISA).

Experience

7 to 10 years in Short Term Underwriting (Personal Lines), with a minimum of 3 years in a senior underwriter/management role.
